Ginger/Gingko/Turmeric Depression

For some reason, ginger is not only beneficial for my nausea, but it also seems to help my mood. Perhaps due to effect on circulation. I only take 250mg per day, Solaray brand. I've looked on the internet, and really nowhere does it say that it helps with mood. Still, it seems to help me. I think you have to get the dosage right, however. 250mg seems just right for me. It's just a good addition to my vitamin regimen, nothing spectacular but it helps. I'm also going to try turmeric because it has some AD properties. A combination of ginger and gingko biloba has been suggested for improved blood flow to the brain which might be beneficial in some cases of depression. Turmeric is also said to cleanse the blood and affect circulation, which might be an added bonus as well. I think these three herbs will help some depression, but you may have to juggle with dosages.

I am going to try Source Naturals turmeric extract because so far, it is the only one I could find with a lower dosage of turmeric, about 350mg per tablet. However, it might not be the best brand. There might be some better Ayurvedic brands out there I haven't seen yet. For me, I tend to do better on low dosages of herbs. The Solaray brand has 700mg of turmeric in its One Daily Formula. I thought this might be too much. I'm using it mainly for depression, not inflammation, and for circulation. Many of the brands add large doses of Bromelain to the turmeric, but I'm just looking for plain Turmeric with a high percentage content of curcumin. Source Naturals adds only 50mg of Bromelain per tablet, which isn't very much. I'm going to search more Ayurvedic quality brands because Source Naturals is not the best, in my opinion. It may be good enough, and the price is right where I get it from, House of Nutrition Online.

I'm new to trying turmeric. I probably will experiment with different brands, and of course, varying dosages. Will let you know what I discover. I don't know if I'll even like it. What are you taking turmeric for, may I ask? It seems like such a versatile spice with many applications. I smoke, and I've read turmeric can be good for the lungs. The problem I have is I already take a lot of meds and vitamins, and sometimes certain herbs don't fit well into my regimen. So I just go on to the next thing. After turmeric, which I hope fits in, is gingko biloba with my doctor's permission of course, because it is said that gingko may make the antipsychotic more effective. I am a little suspicious about that statement, but I may try it anyway because of its positive effect on brain circulation. Proper circulation is important in depression, but not everybody has reduced blood flow to the brain. Turmeric should help keep the blood healthy, which will be beneficial to the brain among other things.

I'm taking turmeric for possible neurogenesis, mood enhancement, joint inflammation, overall health, and mTOR inhibition-which has been implicated in life extension. I have read that curcumin may ward off certain cancers so it may be a good idea for you for this reason as well. Have you ever considered taking resveratrol? It has also been shown to improve blood flow in the brain. It also may help ward off cancers and may improve mood through a few different mechanisms.

I think both gingko and ginger are associated with increased bruising/bleeding risk (probably related to improving circulation), so please be careful. I know you're conservative with your dosing, but there might be a cumulative effect. I'm not sure about turmeric.

Thanks for the warning. I have heard of the bleeding risk associated with ginkgo. Not so sure I would take it due to being on antidepressants and antipsychotic medication.

So far, I like ginger for helping with mood, but I don't know about the Turmeric. I took my first dose of it yesterday, and I didn't really like it. Someone said it has MAOI effects, and maybe it interacted with my medicine. I had a similar reaction to Kava Kava because it too, has MAOI effects, and you really shouldn't take it with medicine. However, Kava Kava works very well for anxiety if you are not on any meds. I remember it helped me a lot years ago.
