NAC........everything gives me insomnia?!

Hey, just started taking N-Acetyl-Cystenie and its giving me terrible insomnia, haven't seen this side effect listed anywhere. Also had probs with n-acetyl-carnitine, taurine, iodine (this turned my fingernails orange as well!!),inositol, b6, b3, vitamin d maybe even b12....and super sensitive to choline!!

Can't work out what is goin on (although i know from testing i'm majory magnesium deficient, which i can't seem to improve, even with daily IM shots), my two big problems are sleep and depression. A sugar/carb free diet slightly improved this for me in the short term but last week i was all depressed again. im considering agressively targeting candida as my next option....heard hypoglycemia and candida linked and i think hypoglycemia is definetly a problem, one which is significantlly worsened when i supplement chromium or coq10.

On NAC i feel quite good/calm but the sleep thing is screwing me over now, i take 1,200 mg when i wake and 1,200mg at bed - if i switched all to morning dosing could this help in any way?

sorry for the rant!! If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

Why so much NAC? I would try taking less and definitely take it in the morning and afternoon, not at night. I have never heard of NAC causing sleeping troubles.

As for Acetyl L Carnitine, that can cause some insomnia. You need to take it upon waking.

B vitamins I can understand they now hype me up but I do take 50mg of B6 daily seems to help with water retention. Phillipa

I empathize with you. It seems for me, that some of the meds which really help depressive give me nasty insomnia.

I'm always having problems with insomnia. I wish my brain would just shut the f*ck down somtimes.

I had the same experience with NAC, insomnia. Only I was only taking 600mg per day. If I took it at bedtime it really kept me awake. Don't know why exactly. Sometimes loading substances in large quantities can cause insomnia. I have this problem with high dose calcium supplements. Anyway, you might try cutting your daily dosage in half, but I'm not sure that will work. It could be, just like some medications, that the insomnia is temporary as you adjust to the NAC. I don't know for sure. You could try just taking 600mg in the morning and none at bedtime to see if this helps. And then GRADUALLY over a period of time start increasing the dose until you are satisfied. In my experience, if I took 300mg in the morning I was able to sleep at night. I'll admit, this is a low dosage, but maybe it's not reasonable to take such a high dosage that you're taking. Perhaps your body doesn't even need that much. You might just start off with a very low dosage and allow your body to adjust to this substance over time. That way you can better pinpoint at what dosage the insomnia occurs.

I only take the NAC at the moment, but have found if it take it in the morning and mid-afternoon i have no such problems....and i've had a good week on it, not miraculous but i haven't felt really depressed at any stage and slept better te last few nights (no dreaming!), also seems to be making me less impulsive in terms of eating and other behaviours.

As for the dosage, its based on studies using 1000mg twice a day, as im 6ft 6 i thought i cud get away with 2 x 600mg twice a day. I had a really sort term positive effect from glutathione injections last summer so hopefully this is an indicator!

Agreed....sleep is so important to me that i won't wait more than a few days to see if the insomnia resolves itself.

Insomnia has stopped and sleep seems to have improved, though i'm also trying to improve hypoglycemia and candida symptoms at the same time so too early to say for certain yet!
