Has anyone been to the Pfeiffer Treatment Center?

Posted by Aya on July 31, 2007, at 11:18:52

Hi there.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried the Pfeiffer Treatment Center in Illinois. It looks for nutritional imbalances and deficiencies in your body that could be responsible for the depressive, etc. symptoms being experienced. I've been medicated for depression for about6 years now and want to start looking into holistic methods. But it's expensive. Has anyone been there, and if so, have you had success with it?

You might want to do a search. To my recollection of those who have posted, it was expensive for little gain. Very disappointing.

I have not actually been to the Pfeiffer Center myself but I attended a week-long course their doctors and scientist gave for doctors in Sydney last year. I also met some of the patients who had been seen there before. The most impressive sight I saw was 2 autistic children aged 4 whose mothers told me they had made a dramatic improvement. I spoke to the children myself and was very impressed. Where I live in Ireland we just do psychotherpy (ABA) which is a waste of time for autism really until the biochemistry is sorted out.I myself learned a lot at the course.Sometimes I can scarcely believe that so much benefit can be achieved so easily.Depression responds best, then schizophrenia and bipolar. Those with severe OCD do not do well as a rule, nor do those who start receiving treatment after the age of about 50.Nutrition is given while continuing the standard medical therapy but many of those with depression will be able to get off medication in due course. If you're interested in this type of therapy, I'd suggest reading some books on metabolic typing instead. I find much of Pfeiffer's protocols contradictory with many errors, although metabolic typing isn't perfect either.

An example is having histadelics avoid copper while taking B6. If he would have done some research he would have realized copper is part of the enzyme histamine oxidase that reduces histamine. Therefore you would want to supplement with copper instead of avoiding it.

Vitamin B6 reduces copper which is also a bad idea with histadelics.

It's no wonder that many of his patients don't get better with his treatments.

Not all histadelics have low copper levels.

From what I read, some histadelics have been found to have high copper levels as well. Some of these were found to have pyroluria along with the histadelia, and others were found to be deficient in zinc altogether. Pyroluria causes severe zinc and B6 deficiencies. If your zinc gets depleted, then your copper levels will become very high. Treatment of that requires repletion of those 2 nutrients.

Many of people who are found to have high copper levels almost always have a zinc defiency as well as a major cause of high copper levels is zinc deficiency.

My son has been suffering with BiPolar, PTSD for 3 years. He's been on several medications with severe reactions and side effects. We took my son to Pfeiffer this past July and just got back his test results. He is deficient in Zinc, High Histamine and borderline reactive Hypoglycemic. He's been on a "primer" supplement that contains zinc and other minerals, vitamins etc. to prepare for his individualized supplement that will be prepared by Pfeiffers Compounding pharmacy, but already my son is feeling alot better... His moods have been great...he's engaging more in conversations and he's starting to draw and read, which he gave up 3 years ago. We will be calling the treatment center today to order the individualized compounded supplements. I did my homework and this center is the real deal.

It would be much appreciated if you told us how old your son is and what exactly is the amount of each nutrient he got.

My son will be 18 this month. The "primer" they prescribed for him contains Vitamin C/250mg...Vitamin E/100IU...Vitamin B6/67mg as pyridoxine HCI & pyridoxal 5 phosphate...Magnesium 22mg..Zinc as zinc picolinate 50mg...Manganese (gluconate) 7.5mg..and other ingredients that they don't disclose in the supplement facts label. There are other "primers" they start patients out with depending on their condition. The supplements he's now been prescribed that will be compounded contain alot of these same ingredients in larger doses and other ingredients. The doses are based on a persons unique chemistry,as wellas weight and height as well as what biochemistry they are lacking in or over producing.

The original Pfeiffer Treatment Center no longer exists. The physicians and founder William Walsh, PhD, left a few years ago. Two of the lead physicians - Albert Mensah, MD and Judith Bowman, MD - started their own clinic in 2009 near Chicago. It is called Mensah Medical. They continue to do the same work developed by William Walsh, PhD and the late Carl Pfeiffer, MD, PhD. My children were seen by Drs. Mensah and Bowman for their anxiety, depression and focus issues. They uncovered their biochemical imbalances through lab tests, extensive history, etc., and prescribed a combination of vitamins, minerals and amino acids tailored to their brain-body chemistry. My husband and I are happy to report that they are all doing well socially and academically. And without drugs! They are worth every penny!
