Any suggestions for improvement?

Posted by holymama on April 15, 2007, at 18:04:32

Hi! I am bipolar and am currently off almost all meds (just ativan before bed or on anxious days), doing homeopathy and taking some nutrients. Lately I have had a crash (depression and anxiety, probably a mixed state). I am on the mend, but could use some help getting out of this depression. The anxiety/agitation has mostly ceased, but I am left feeling down and unmotivated.

Here is what I take. If anyone has any suggestions for what I could increase or add, I would appreciate the advice.

Fish Oil 2000 mg am 2000 mg pm
Evening Primrose oil 1300 mg am 1300 mg pm
5-HTP 100 mg am 100 mg pm
L-Tyrosine 500 mg pm
Calcium/Magnesium 666 mg am 666 mg pm

I also occasionally take :

Biotin 1000 mcg am
Folic Acid 8000 mcg am
(I am not sure why my nutritionist suggested these, which is why I don't take them reguarly.)

I haven't had an appointment with my nutritionist in a long time. It's too damn expensive.

Thanks, anyone who has ideas for me. :)

I wish I had some good suggestions for you, but I honestly don't know about this. I noticed you posted this about a week ago. Any improvement since (I hope)? Peace...Saturn.

Thanks Saturn,

No improvement. I'm still waiting for the depression to cease. This one is lasting a while.

Thanks for the note.

Have you ever considered light therapy? There's some anecdotal evidence that it may be helpful in non-seasonal depression (though I'm unaware of any scientific support of this). Just a thought if you decide not to go the rx med route--and of course there's always that option. Either way you'd have to be cautious of triggering mania.

I honestly don't know a lot about BPD, so I hope you have the opportunity to speak with a pdoc.

One other thing I'd mention, is that some people claim to do better on high EPA fish oil as opposed to the standard EPA/DHA preparations commonly available. It has been claimed that the DHA component may cause agitation/anxiety in some people...but this is highly controversial and the high EPA versions are much pricier than standard ones.

I hope at least your anxiety/agitation has still abated. Peace...Saturn.

Thanks so much Saturn,
I do light therapy, but not on a regular schedule. I should work on that.

I will also look into high EPA/low DHA fish oil. My current brand is a ratio of 3:2. Thanks so much for that idea.
