HELP! Remedies for Terrible Canker Sore???

Posted by mixed_state on December 12, 2006, at 21:20:03

If anyone knows any natural (or artificial) remedies for a terrible canker sore that is causing me an insane amount of pain (the cigarette put out in mouth metaphor is fitting), please help! I am desperate.

Alum always worked for me. I never see it any more at the store but I think it's in the spice section.

Here's a link to that and other natural cures:

Do you mean mouth ulcers or cold sores?

Mouth ulcers: essentially a tannin coating.

Cold Sores: very large doses of lysine rapidly decreasing as it takes effect.

St John's Wort!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although this is more of a preventative thing. I used to regulary get cold sores, and then I started taking SJW. I got one tiny cold sore when on it, and since then I have been completely cold sore free for about a year now (touch wood). I then read that SJW is supposedly anti-viral and even indicated on some internet sources for cold sores although there isn't much research to back it up. I think this is probably more to do with the fact that SJW isn't patentable and also because its more of a preventative measure, rather than some cream you apply.

I used to use that Zovirax, which worked the best.

If you mean mouth ulcers, then I read somewhere that vitamin A is good. I mean mouth ulcers can be indicative of a vit A defincency.

Kind regards

Meri

Stop eating gluten, this reduced the incident of mouth ulcers (Canker sores) for me about 80%.

I did know of a brilliant forum regarding mouth ulcers and their treatment. Shame I've lost the link! :( If you suffer from recurrent mouth ulcers then definitely look in your diet. Also some high quality kava root left to swill in the mouth for a few minutes will numb the pain considerably.

My goodness I found the link!! hurrah

http://www.mouthulcers.org/ this site is just excellent.

Zinc Sulphate put directly on to the mouth ulcers is supposed to be very helpful in healing the ulcer.

Lots of good prevention in the above posts. I mentioned Alum only for quick symptomatic relief. It hurts for a second or two but quickly dries and seals the canker sore. (not sure about other types of sores) The sore is usually gone in a couple days.

Everybody and their dog had canker sores when I was growing up. Alum was the gold standard for canker sore treatment and it was almost unAmerican not to have Alum in your house.

But as many before me indicate, getting at the root cause is key. Somehow I just outgrew canker sores and haven't kept up on the latest treatments.

I've also, more recently, used a Goldenseal-Plantain Salve that works wonders for skin abnormalities. I had a tiny skin tag under my armpit that never came back after 3 days of the salve. Something that had irritated and even bled for months, dropped off, and never returned. I like the salve. You gotta like, even love, the salve too! (iherb.com)

I give it to people for Christmas I love it so much. It's all in the salve.

I applied hydrogen peroxide with baking soda directly to the sore and it hurt like crazy. If anything, it localized the pain (a good thing), but this could also be from time elapsed. I picked up alum and it really stung, in a piercing way, and it also didn't do too much. Maybe by tomorrow I will notice a difference?

mouthulcers.org is great! I might try the remedy "Punchin' the pillow". I really think time and a healthier lifestyle will heal it most effectively.
