anti-depressive: omega-3 fatty acids uridine ?

Posted by dessbee on November 24, 2006, at 10:29:15

Rat experiments has shown that omega-3 fatty acids and uridine (a natural substance found in foods) work just as well as antidepressants in preventing signs of depression

Uridine is an important element found in mother's milk and baby formula and is essential for early nerve growth. Uridine also occurs in sugar beets and molasses made from those beets.
Uridine hasn't been clinically tested on people with mood disorders

Somebody told me that RNA/DNA was a source of uridine. At any rate, the combination of this and omega-3 did have synergistic effects.

I'm wondering what that most concentrated source of uridine is.

Sugar beets and molasses are supposed to be rich on uridine.

Really unusual that supplement industry hasn't provided any extract from sugar beets since uridine is not patentable. The discovery of uridine's effect on depression has been known since at least 2003.

Repligen is doing clinical trials with their substance called RG2417 (uridine):

I wish we knew how much beets or beet molasses you would have to eat every day. Anyone know? Actually, when they mentioned beet molasses I never heard of it. I wonder if that is what is in the grocery store? Is that where regular molasses comes from?

At least with fish oil we know from clinical studies how much to take.

Where do you find beet molasses. How much to take? Or how many beets to eat every day?

Gee, when I'm depressed I'll try anything, especially if it's food.

There was a previous thread on uridine last year: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20050323/msgs/481903.html See Larry's comments especially.

I tried the CDP choline (citicholine)to boost uridine as a result of that research but only took it a few times as it made me feel more nervous and stressed.

The MIT research suggests that a cocktail treatment of omega-3 fatty acids, uridine and choline are all needed by brain neurons to make phospholipids, the primary component of cell membranes

In Europe you can only buy 40 kilo beet molasses from "farm stores". It's cheap though... only 1$/kilo.
Sugar content is 50% and is mixed with feedstuff to stimulate cattle's apetite.

It is not sold in regular stores since it does not taste very nice.

The uridine injections acted right away, but the omega-3 fatty acids took 30 days to kick in. That's about as long as it takes for people to get depression relief from many antidepressant drugs like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), say the researchers. SSRIs include Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft.

Combining lower doses of uridine and omega-3 fatty acids was even more helpful. "Less of each agent is required for effectiveness when the treatments are administered together,"
