Body temperature

Posted by teejay on November 15, 2006, at 20:28:45

Hi all,

its been a while since tealady suggested I check myself for thyroid problems but today I took a step in the right direction by buying a thermometer.

I know I should take my temperature in the morning before rising, but you know how us big kids are with new toys!

I came in after driving home frommy friends and took a reading. 36.8 degrees which seemed a little low to me. I put it down to coming in from outside in the cold. I've now sat in the warm house for a couple of hours in front of my PC and drank a couple of mugs of coffee so though if I take the reading again it might be a bit higher. Wrong, its now 36.5 degrees.

Does that tell you guys anything? I will start from tomorrow morning taking my temperature on waking and will report the results here.

I'll do a resume of my temperatures after a week, but to get you started, my temperature on waking today was 36.4 degrees. Tested twice, ten minutes apart and readings were identical.

If its underam, that's fine :)
Yesterady I got 36.2 underarm
Underam can be up to about 1 degree less than 37C, but I always feel OK over 36.1, and if its ever 36.6 I feel great.
Before thyroid meds it didnt seem to measure on waking, then gradually registered , and steadily rose after being on thryoid meds for a while.. my thermometer didn't go any lower than 32. But I haven't hard of anyone that low.. I had 5 different thermometers.. and they all agree always..so it wasnt that.
I drop them and break em at the time as I couldnt hold anything that small well.. I can now!
I hated breaking the mercury thermometers, but the digital ones all seem to agree with them anyway in my experience... sometimes I had to take my temp a few times though to get a "good " reading(same as the mercury ones) as you can't leave the digital ones underarm long enough sometimes before they "beep". So I'd give them 3 tries ..just to make sure.

You're supposed to measure it on waking for the basal temp, and your temp is supposed to rise during the day.. hitting a high in the evening, I think; but it'll be later than that for you I guess if you're still on late shift :)

Also higher after eating,(thermogenesis-When you ingest food, your metabolic rate increases above the fasting level) or after exercise..similar incr in metabolic rate; which is why you take your metabolic rate as soon as you wake to get the basal rate.

This may have some links in it on taking temps

I haven't looked at it for a while so I hope they all still work.

Here's a great link for checking temperature re: thyroid things....

http://www.thyroiduk.org/

Go to FAQ and there's stuff in the Barnes Temperature test, the one you're supposed to use...

Are you a gal? I am, and you have to take your temp immediately after your period, if you're not on any hormone treatment....

But just click around, there's alot of useful info in there.

Nope, not a gal.......well not the last time I looked anyway! ;-) Thanks for the link though.

Tealady, nope thats under the tongue measurement. After doing some reading its recommended to not use under arm as its too unreliable so all the figures I have quoted are for under tongue.

Hang on, will check it again now...... 36.3 (will now check underarm for you...35.8)

Another update! Quite interesting this actually.

Had dinner and checked it 20 mins after eating and my temp had risen to 36.9 but 20 mins after that it had fallen to 36.5 and now about an hour and a half after eating its back to 36.3 again.

That is interesting actually. What kind of thermometer do you use? Just shows the um, thermal whatnot thing. Increase in metabolism etc etc....

Been in the house all day with the heating on so quite warm today but decided to do the before and after dinner thing again today.

36.7 just before eating and 5 mins after eating 37.5 degrees. Astonishing difference.

Dunno if it means much though.

Came in tonight, house is warm so no need to put the heating on. Drunk almost a bottle of wine so decided to check my temp.

Under the tongue, 36 degrees (first try was 35.8)

Now that seems low to me given its late at night and my temp should be high?

A little perspective here -

Temperature fluctuation of .2 - .6 degrees are probably not a significant change, but rather reflect variations in the measuring device.

Thermometers purchased over the counter are only accurate +/- a degree really. Even if they are digital.

Also, it is completely normal (and I agree pretty cool) that body temperature may rise slightly after eating. It is reflective of an increase in basal metabolism in order to digest food.

Have you read up on Wilsons Temp symdrome. The idea that some of us are running colder than normal our t4 doesn't get properly produced as a result.

Thanks sregan, yes I did briefly have a look at the wilsons site. I'm trying not to cloud my thoughts yet with ideas though and trying to stick to data gathering just now. Once I have the data, you can be sure I'll convince myself I have lots of different ailments ;-)

Interestingly, I now have a few days of readings. First 2 days were 36.4 and 36.5 but then the next two nights I went to bed after downing a bottle of wine and each morning the readings were 36.7 and 37.1 but today its back to 36.2 again so it seems that drinking before bedtime gives us a higher temperature reading the next day.

Dunno what it all means yet though.

It means you should drink more wine! Nota bad option I'd say. ;)

LOL, I don't need any encouragement! ;-)

Actually, a day or two drinking on the evening before bed does seem to help me feel a bit better, but if I extend that to 4 or 5 days I start to feel really rough.

On the whole I think alcohol isn't a big help, but it does provide some welcome relief from my symptoms now and then.
