Need Help

Posted by janetlee on November 2, 2006, at 16:21:39

I posted about this a few days ago with only one response, but I'm hoping someone will be able to give me some advice this time around. I just received some supplements thru the mail and need to know how to take them wisely. I have anxiety disorder and it is now seeming to be under control with Paxil CR 25mg a day. I've been off of Xanax for about 2 weeks now. I've been taking fish oil, B vitamins, borage oil, and a multivatimin. now I need to find out about a few other supplements. I bought some naicinamide in case I get really anxious (rather than Xanax). Shouldn't I only take niacinamide as needed, rather than everyday? Next question: I bought some taurine. Should I just take it daily (500mg capsule)? Same question for the L-theanine(100mg capsules). Also, I bought magnesium as Albion amino acid chelated with Optimum Abzorption Complex 45mg consisiting of Ginger (root), Piper longum, and piper nigrum. I ordered all this from the same high-rated company, that is why I didn't buy the magnesium taurate (they didn't sell it). I hope I made a good choice with this magnesium supplement. I couldn't take Natural Calm magnesium as it gave me diarrhea. I'm starting with 100mg a day and working my way up higher. If anyone here has any advice, even if it's only in regards to one of my questions, please let me hear from you! I really need some guidance here! Many thanks!

Hi janet, sorry to be the only one so far who has replied!!!

Magnesium. They say take it to 'bowel tolerance' but I could never get there myself, in fact if anything I found magnesium 'stiffened' my stools. I would say though, if you are deficient then 800mg per day is no problem at least in the beginning while you are correcting the deficiency.

Taurine is an odd one......its good for anxiety BUT for some people it makes anxiety worse (big B vit sups and large amounts of fish oil do this to me).

Niacinamide is supposed to be anxiolytic but didnt do much for me.

Big doses of B vits dont suit everyone and aggravate some peoples symptoms. (I often think this is because people take too much though)

The BEST advice I can give you is dont throw everything in the melting pot at once as you wont know what REALLY helps you.

The test results show low MAG and ZINC so why not just supplement both of those for a MONTH and report back here to see what people think based on your improvement?

Had a drink tonight so please excuse me if this post sounds a little disjointed.

Hope things work out well for you and hope my comments are at least of some use to you.

TJ

Thanks for the reply TJ. The problem with me is that I have been feeling better already and have been on the 25mg of Paxil CR for 3 weeks as of today. So I don't know if it's solely the Paxil or if the B's and fish oil are helping too. I know they aren't hurting though and apparently are good for me. As to the diarrhea with magnesium, I am not sure if I'm deficient in the first place, but with my eating habits, I probably am. However, I have IBS, so I don't always know which is causing the bathroom woes-the mag or the IBS! I guess for now, I'll hold back on the Taurine and try it IF I feel bad. I am sureuncertain about the L-theanine. Hopefully someone will reply about these points. Thanks again for your help!

Have you tried low carb diet to alleviate your IBS?

Fish oil has added to my anxiety as well as my multi vitamin (they are adding some strange things to multi's more chance of something in there that your body might have a problem with).

The only thing that really helped my anxiety was Theanine. You can take 100mg twice a day before it gets weird.

I've had mixed results with Taurine (1000mg on empty stomach) and Lysine (same) are both supposed to be glutamate blockers as are Magnesium, Zinc and possibly Vitamin E. I can't testify to whether they work or not.

Two things to consider. If something is not working you might need to try it at a higher dose (find the safe highest dose, for C and Mag you'll start having diarrhea when you get too high).

Also make only ONE change at a time perhaps for a week. If you have several substances in your body you'll never know what is helping and what isn't.

I recently bought niacinimide (b3) because I read that it potentiates GABA so it should help with anxiety but I haven't experienced much to report. I've had a little success with GABA itself and mixed results with L-Glutamine (GABA precursor).

Thanks, Shawn. What's happened is that I am on Paxil CR 25mg and it is helping a lot. I am still taking the supplements I had mentioned, but I haven't taken any of the taurine or l-theanine. I will try them IF I have any anxiety not taken care of by the paxil and supplements. At least I'll have them on hand, just in case! Thanks again for your reply and I wish you the best!

Janet, good luck with the Paxil. If it's working for you there is no need to mess with a good thing. The KISS philosophy is good to adhere to if you can (simple).
