Expiration Dates

Posted by janetlee on October 23, 2006, at 11:16:53

I had submitted this question yesterday, but apparently I did something wrong as I don't see it on the forum, so I'll try again. I saw online that there's some magnesium taurate available (a highly respected brand) that has an expiration date of 11/06 and is therefore clearanced-priced at $4.20. Do you think I should try it or pass on it? I wouldn't think that it's "suddenly" no good, would you? But on the other hand...sigh! Any suggestions?

I'm currently taking some chondroitin and glucosamine that expired 09/04. This might make you feel better about your magnesium, even though it is no doubt inadvisable. I have whole boxes of stuff I have to work my way through.

Cant see it being a problem. As you say, its generally only a guideline and its hardly years and years out of date.

Enjoy your bargain!

Man at health food store told me expiration dates matter more with herbs; ie, they have "oils" and other organic elements which can go bad. But he felt that any minerals could last for years. How accurate his info is, I can't say.

The mineral part..like Mg will last forever(part of the ground), its the other part the may possibly fo off..like if Mg is chelated to an amino acid..the amino acid part is the part that may go off.
Things like NaCl (sodium chloride) or MgCl(magnesium chloride) will last forever, although the MgCl will absorb water from the air given half a chance!
