Skull cap (the herb not the religious headress)

Posted by teejay on May 3, 2006, at 19:13:48

has anyone tried this and had any good or bad results with it? I bought some today (capsules of 400mg which I should take 3 of a day according to the container) and have taken just 2 so far but somehow feel a bit more chilled and clear headed tonight. Probably just a placebo effect but one never knows!

Thoughts anyone?

G'day TJ!
Skullcap is supposed to be a good sedative herb for people with depression. I like it. Only ever made tea with it. I'd boil up a heaped dessert spoon I guess in water for 10 minutes. That must be a few grammes at least. One of the best ones, I think.
Nice to see you back

Thanks for the warm welcome declan :-))

One of the main characteristics of my depression is a kind of nervous or anxious aggression. I keep it in check of course but that on its own creates further anxiety and tension (both mental and physical). To be able to naturally disperse some of that free floating tension and anxiousness would really be a big step forward for me.

I stumbled on skullcap by accident really but from what i've read I think it might really help. Oddly I kinda expected it to give me a bit of brain fog and slow me up a bit but on the contrary I seem more able to concentrate than normal.

glad to hear the SK helped you :-)

Skullcap, in ayurvedic terms, is pitta-reducing - pitta having to do with heat and fiery emotions. So it should help with aggression.

I think I read in the "Yoga of Herbs" that it's highly recommended as an aid to better meditation.

For a sedating smoke (I use a waterpipe) a damiana and skullcap mix is good. Whichever way I take it, I find it is one of the "cleaner" herbs, without the body load of something like valerian root.

A couple other pitta-pacifying *cooling* herbs I use a lot are Yellow Dock and Goldenseal. Very subtle but calming. Yellow Dock is famous for blood purification.

Thanks very much for your input verne.

I was gonna give an update regarding my skullcap use but just had a phone call and have to go out! I'll do it in the next few days.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I will have to see if I can get some to try out, next time I'm in town.

I bet there's some in that Chinese potion I'm using.

I believe skullcap has affinity for both 5-ht1a and d1 receptors. These bindings are probablt responsible for some of the antidepressant effects of the herb.

Does anyone know how long this herb can be taken without break. Does it need periodic breaks or can it be taken indefinately ?

I would be very cautious with a drug like skullcap.

3 or 4 weeks, then rest. That's my intuition.
