anyone ever use a negative ion generator?

Posted by jrbecker on December 13, 2005, at 17:06:12

I'm looking into the possibility of purchasing a negative ion generator. I was hoping to get some feedback about how others reacted to this treatment. Any input would be welcome. thanks.

Is there any bio-chemical reason for a negative ion generator.

it's still very experimental, but here's some info...

Psychol Med. 2005 Jul;35(7):945-55.

Controlled trial of bright light and negative air ions for chronic depression.

Goel N, Terman M, Terman JS, Macchi MM, Stewart JW.

BACKGROUND: This randomized controlled trial investigates the efficacy of two non-pharmacologic treatments, bright light and high-density negative air ions for non-seasonal chronic depression. Both methods have shown clinical success for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). METHOD: Patients were 24 (75%) women and 8 (25%) men, ages 22-65 years (mean age +/- S.D., 43.7 +/- 12.4 years), with Major Depressive Disorder, Single Episode (DSM-IV code, 296.2), Chronic (episode duration > or = 2 years). Patients were entered throughout the year and randomly assigned to exposure to bright light (10 000 lux, n = 10), or high-density (4.5 x 10(14) ions/s flow rate, n = 12) or low-density (1.7 x 10(11) ions/s, n = 10, placebo control) negative air ions. Home treatment sessions occurred for 1 h upon awakening for 5 weeks. Blinded raters assessed symptom severity weekly with the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale--Seasonal Affective Disorder (SIGH-SAD) version. Evening saliva samples were obtained before and after treatment for ascertainment of circadian melatonin rhythm phase. RESULTS: SIGH-SAD score improvement was 53.7% for bright light and 51.1% for high-density ions v. 170% for low-density ions. Remission rates were 50%, 50% and 0% respectively. The presence or severity of atypical symptoms did not predict response to either treatment modality, nor were phase advances to light associated with positive response. CONCLUSIONS: Both bright light and negative air ions are effective for treatment of chronic depression. Remission rates are similar to those for SAD, but without a seasonal dependency or apparent mediation by circadian rhythm phase shifts. Combination treatment with antidepressant drugs may further enhance clinical response.

Becker, very interesting idea, however it raises more questions than answers. By reducing blood serotonin how does this makes us feel better. Ive had a blood serotonin test and the results were extremely low . However I do suffer from depression and anxiety. Yet I have noticed that I feel better when by the sea. In fact the effect is so noticable that when feeling down I do make trips to the sea side to get a lift in mood.

I had a negative ion air generator and used to wonder if it made the air more like it is just before a storm. There are also these thingos that seperate water into positive and negative ions or somesuch, and you drink the negative part. They're supposed to cure everything and if I had the money I'd get one.

so, you did have a generator? do you care to give us some details about how it went? what model did you have?

thanks in advance.

Hi
I dunno if it was any good. I bought it at least 25 years ago, and I strongly suspect it's been chucked out, but you never know round here. It was from an American Express catalogue. That's all I remember.
What about the water thing. (Ion life water.) Have you heard of that?

can't say that I have.

There seems to be quite a bit of diversity offered in the ion generator models. Just like there are some light box models there being marketed for SAD that don't produce the proper range lux [light] units recommended by experts, there also seems to be ion generators being sold on the web that aren't in range of the recommended output level.

One model that I am considering though is the Sphere Negative Ion Generator that has been used in studies by some of the acclaimed experts in the field such as Michael Terman.

The ionic water machine does exist you can find them at http://www.jupiterionizers.com/

Becker Ive examined the Sphere Negative Ion Generator and the stats are VERY impressive. When comparing different ion generators you often see them quoting ion generation in the millons of units. This model claims a trillion units.????
I cant believe theres such a difference can exist

I've used a Pentex ionizer for some time now. This is supposed to be one of the best and is industrial strength. I definantly sleep better when the unit is running and have more vivid dreams.

Jrbecker,

I tried using a negative ion generator several months ago out of desperation while I was taking Wellbutrin and lithium. I can't remember the brand name of the device for the life of me, but I remember that it was an air purifier with a built-in negative ion generator. I noticed no change in my mood, energy level, sleep patterns, or anything else whatsoever.

I had considered this, based on a suggestion in the book "Beyond Prozac," but then I read this....

Interesting article. I also found it interesting that Consumer Reports successfully defended itself in a defamation law suit filed by Sharper Image over the negative review that was given to the Ionic Breeze air cleaner.
