Maca .. JLx

Posted by tealady on August 12, 2005, at 2:11:46

Hi JLx,

I read you'd tried Maca. I'm considering it for adrenal support based on the idea that its better to take a broad supplement than just cortisol which only supports part of adrenal functon.

I feel I don't need cortisol anymore..like I've recovered enough (no longer vomiting and shaking and walking into walls, getting dizzy etc..well not often and my blood pressure has come up) but I feel like I still need something a bit milder but broader adrenal support.

I also take (like you) Dhea..about 5mg daily on and off...simlar to you in effect. I started at 20mg and that was way too much testosterone!
I know Dhea supports adrenal function too.

I got a DHEA /antioxidant mix made up on my selected ingredients from the compounding pharmacist.
What form of DHEA do you take? I just take caps but I have read that it should be time-released or some take a cream form ..which would also have some time release characteristics?

I'm looking for experiences of anyone who has tried maca..or Maca and DHEA.
I've found I can get Maca in Oz (sourced from Peru). I can't get adrenal glandulars over here that I know of..or import them I think.

Did Maca help you cope better with anxiety or staying awake or increase your estrogen..like what effects did it have? ..good and bad

thanks, and good to see u back again,
tea

Hi Jan,

I am not JLx but I did try maca. I used the Old World Botanicals brand (at least I think that was the name of it) mainly for hotflashes. I worked well for a while but then pooped out even though I was taking the suggested breaks. I think that there was a subtle overall feeling better response from it but I couldn't really give you much detail at this point. Also, I may have been able to get a response again if I had increased the dosage a lot. I don't even remember what dosage I was taking initially.

Well, that sounds like progress. :)

I didn't know that actually, or if I did, I forgot it. Like many things... ;)

I've been taking tablets. No particular brand, just what my local health food store has. What is supposed to be the benefit of the time release action? I don't know if the cream necessarily would be time released. Perhaps there's some advantage though in bypassing the digestive process, as there sometimes is with these things.

Boy, I wish I would keep a diary or something with these things. It's been a few years now since I took it. My recollection is that it gave me an overall better feeling. Can't be more specific than that, I'm afraid. It was enough so that I ordered again from my initial order, which was 1 or 2 months, I think.

I quit taking it because I had a breast lump. I went to my doc and she said, "Yup it's a lump" and referred me to a surgeon. This bit of useless "health care" cost me $75 and I'm sure the surgeon would have cost me hundreds more. Instead I bought Dr. Susan Love's "Breast Book" at a remainder outlet for $7 and concluded it was probably like a cyst. I quit taking the maca though since it had obviously exacerbated it. Cysts wax and wane with periods, as this one did, but never more so than it did on the maca so obviously the estrogen boost was fairly robust. (No more lump now that I'm in menopause.)

Thanks. I'm struggling. Giving up on my latest brand of fish oil. Going to try magnesium orotate and CDP choline next, I think. Don't know if you followed that thread with Larry on that, but the possibilities sound intriguing.

Like Kara, I took Old World Botanicals too, btw.
