Best treatment for schizophrenia? HELP!

Posted by magee on June 28, 2005, at 14:13:56

My sister is very ill. I flew across the country to try and help but I'm at a loss. I don't even know how to talk to her. I just LOVE her. But I know that's not enough.
She is off meds(about a yr) and not seeing her doc and really acting crazy. She hears voices and is constantly talking to them. She has no life.
I am wanting to know the who what where of the best available treatments out there, including hospitals, doctors and meds. I believe my sister needs a multi faceted approach to step her back into life that is worth living.
I value your success stories and experience on either end of this.
Thanks
Magee

Well, first I would get a nutritional anaylsis done. Like a hair analysis. Anything really, to determine her current state of nutrition, levels of vitamins and minerals

---------------------------------------------

The main alternative supplements used for schistophrenia are high dose vitamin C (3 gram/day approx)
I recomend time release vitamin C.

Niacinamide 100-300mg.

The omega 3 fatty acids are also showing some promise in treating certain aspects of the disorder.

Taurine 1000mg-2000mg might also be useful.
Esp if anxiety is a promanant feature.

Magnesium 50-200mg/day is good if she appears to
be in a manic/elated state.

-----------------------------------------

Take the omega 3 in the morning.
Take the vitamin C spread out through day,
and the magnesium, taurine, and Niacin at night,
as they are calming supplements.

Don't abandon medical treatment as schitsophrenia can be a serious disorder. But, make sure you get a nutritional analysis. There have been many people on high dose antipsychotic meds for years who turned out to be deficiant in niacin (which can produce all the symtpoms of schitsophrenia)

Thank you Linkadge
That was very helpful
My sister is so ill that she needs to be hospitalized and stabilized with the meds (this is the crisis we are dealing with now) ~ She is delusional, has voices, talks and shouts at them paranoid, rages, isolation etc.
But down the line, when she is rational, I am hoping to introduce the nutritional piece.
Are you a doctor, nutritionist, or
have you struggled yourself?
Peace and thanks again for responding,
Magee

No, I am not a doctor, but I am familliar with many of the alternative treatments for various psychological disorders.

Schitsophrenia is very complex. Some theorize it is due to imballences in dopaminergic neurotransmission.

Antipsychotic drugs work by blocking the actions of dopamine in certain ares of the brain.

Its really complex and a lot is unknown. What often happens is that as the disease progresses, the patient's diet becomes increasingly sparce in nutrients that may play a pivital role in recovery.

An individualized approach is alwyas best. Many people with the disease are helped by the addition of certain alternative treatments.

The conventional treatment is antipsychotic medication which usually helps to some extent. I have been impressed though by the nutritional tests and treatment done by the Pfeiffer Center in Chicago (www.hriptc.org). As a physician in Ireland I find that the antipsychotics plus nutrition can get a very good result in the majority of cases.

Dear Ed O' Flaherty,
Thank you and God Bless you for responding.
I am convinced that what you say is so - and that those who do have a shot at recovery are leaving no stone unturned. I will keep this information and look into the Pffeifer website.
Right now we are at the very ugly stage of trying to get her hospitalized when she doesn't want to go. Any tips on THAT?
Thanks

Try and bond with her so that she can trust you.
Perhaps the best way to do this is by bringing up memories from childhood that are completely neutral to the illness. She might then see you as her sister, and not sombody who wants to hurt her.
