Do ingested lecithin supplements do any good?

Posted by Sarah T. on June 1, 2005, at 19:30:16

A few years ago, I went to a doctor who specializes in "Integrative Medicine." When I told her that I took lecithin capsules, she asked me why. I mentioned a few reasons, and she replied that she'd done some research on it when she was in medical school and found that it provided absolutely no benefit. I found this difficult to believe. Do any of you take lecithin capsules or granules on a regular basis? Do you think it's doing you any good?

hi -

yes - lecithin does have quite a marked effect on me when I take it. I usually take 1 liquid cap of triple lecithin a day with my fish oil and it really seems to help my concentration in my tennis lessons.

Too much and it makes me depressed - but just one a day seems to help quite a bit.

I know many people who take nootropics also take lecithin with B5 and swear by it for mental alertness/calmness.

Hi Loops. That's very interesting that too much makes you depressed. Can you tell me what that depression from too much lecithin is like? Is it more of a low mood depression or a physical depression or both? You said that it helps with concentration in your tennis lessons. Does it make you more awake? If so, I guess I shouldn't take it at night.

Hi Sarah -

I would say it is a slightly calming feeling - although sometimes I notice I am a little more talkative after taking it, which is odd if it is calming.

What I do notice is that my coordination seems to be better in tennis - also the game flows more and my timing of the ball is better.

The depression is just a sense of lowness and feeling slightly annoyed, although I can't remember that well as it has been a long time since I 'od'd' on it.

I have never noticed it interfering with my sleep, but then I have chronic sleep problems anyway (which are at last improving).

One other point - when I first started on fish oil my various inflammation problems continued (eczema, psoriasis, back problems) for A LONG TIME - even on high dose EPA. After 5-6 months, they suddenly started to get better. This ties in with lecithin - because when I first started to take it in conjunction with the fish oil, I found I got an allergic reaction to it if I took to much (flushing, itchiness - made eczema worse). These days, voila! No such problems, even if I take over one capsule.

I could be wrong, but I think it has taken a long time for the fish oil to really start working - although mentally I started improving upon the first dose, which really was quite amazing.

I think it is a great brain nutrient anyway; I seem to recall one poster here who swore by the combination of fish oil and lecithin for improving if not resolving his agoraphobia and OCD.
