I'm freaked about fluride in green tea again!!

Posted by linkadge on February 27, 2005, at 15:10:30

I can't stand it. Every time I find something that helps, somebody comes and snaches it up.

I recently read that green tea is extremely high in fluoride. And will lead to all sorts of health problems.

Do any brands have less fluoride than others ??

You asked about this about six months ago. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/alter/20040815/msgs/383400.html

Fluoride content is inversely related to the age of the leaves, and the quality of the tea. Green teas are always made from the youngest leaves, and would have the least fluoride of any tea products. Brits have been drinking tea daily for generations, without evidence of fluoride toxicity. There's no reason to worry about green tea, IMHO.

Is it the caffiene or the l-theanine that you are responding to? or both? If you're worried, you can take an l-theanine supplement to achieve the calming effects. White tea is nice too (just fyi).

not sure how the extract compares at all?
I don't really feel comfortable taking 100mg of green tea extract a day.(or 200mg if I take the caps twice a day as I'm supposed to.
Is that a relatively small amount of fluoride compared to what is in a glass of drinking water(which I can notice BTW)
I've managed to cut out water mostly by collecting my own usually.

To me, it sounds like you're saying that green tea will lead to health problems, and as far as I can remember, there's never been a study that says green tea is not extremely good for you. True, it might be somewhat high in fluoride and fluoride might be bad, but there's no evidence to support that green tea is bad. I wouldn't worry at all! Drink up.

hmm
I guess if I assume a level of fluoride in water supply of 1.5ppm, then one litre water contains 1.25 *10E-6 *10E+6mg =1.25mg in one litre. I notice this amount.
Now green tea extract contains say 62.5ppm (and I assume they don't mean diluted as a tea in water, just the powder), so that means 2 caps contain only
2*62.5*10E-6mg = 1.25*10E2*10E-6= 1.25*10E-4mg

so only 1/10000 the amount as in one litre of tap water, so I shouldn't notice it I guess...if this is what they mean by the concentration level.

pls let me know if this is the correct interpretation..just beginning to kickstart that part of my brain :-)

Guess its also a different fluoride compound in the green tea as well (a more natural ro our bodies kind)

Seriously, some people drink it continuously ALL day. Someone in the paper this morning said he drinks about 30 cups a day!

I'm not sure about the exact math (I will need to find the exact page. But the page indicated that recent studies suggested that common green tea bags, (Ie Tetly was in study) contained about 8-10 times the fluoride that water had. It also linked green tea intake to some sort of bone fluoridation thing, which was somewhat serious.
Some tea companies even advertise their extremely high fluoride content as a preventitive for tooth decay.

I'm getting off of it, untill someone can guarentee a minimum content.

I know I'm paranoid, but its because I have too much copper and vanadium in my system. These metals are also found in high levels in tea.

The mathematical calculation is correctly done. There is no difference in the sorts of fluoride. They are the same, regardless of origin.

Right. And black teas (traditional fermented teas) have higher fluoride than do green teas. Nobody ever got concerned about fluorosis (fluoride toxicity) in British tea drinkers.

Based on the data tealady provided, it would be safe to use green tea extracts rather than using whole leaf products, in any case.
