is St Johns Wort good for me? help please

Posted by qbsbrown on February 26, 2005, at 22:47:39

I respond terribly to ssris, extreme irritability, racing mind, worse depression/anxiety etc. I've quit all of them.
Could I just be serotonin sensitive.
Will SJW work in the same way, and irritate me? Or does is it work different than reuptake?

i appreciate any advice

SJW does have some serotogenic effect, and could theoretically affect you the same way.

It does however have other mechanisms of action, ie GABA, dopamine, and norepinephrine, glutamate and others.

The best you can do is try it slowly and watch for the warning signs.

Failing this, you may try SAMe, which works mainly via dopamine, and has only slight, indirect serotonin effect.

Best of Luck

Hi Joebob,
Excuse me for butting in here by I wondered if you might answer a few questions for me on your SJW usage. Do you find you need to watch your diet at all for tyramine at that dose? Also, how long have you been at that dose? Did you notice a big difference in effectiveness or side effects when going from 900 to 1800? Does it help with anxiety at all? Lastly, what brand are you using? (The study above used Perika.)

Sorry to ask so many questions but I'm really curious about higher dose SJW right now. I'm considering trying it soon.

Thanks,
Kara

SJW works by completely novel mechanisms, some not yet fully elucidated.

You can probably judge the likelihood that SJW will do similar things as do the SSRIs by looking at the typical side-effect profile. Irritability or racing mind are not on the list. Most likely are headache or gastric upset, but each passes rather quickly as the body adjusts. SJW is the most effective and gentlest (I mean those terms in combination. Other prescription meds have more powerful effect, but I couldn't tolerate their effect either) antidepressant I've ever used.
