Kava Kava

...... is banned in the UK, I never tried it while it was available.

How effective is it as an anxiolytic?

Ed.

It is banned because it can cause liver failure!! Also, you can apparently become dependent on it.

I had a friend who used it and it mellowed him out, but it was pretty sedating. He only used it for a month.

Ed I don't think you are missing much. I used to live in the UK but now I'm in New Zealand. I found an Indian shopkeeper who keeps Fijian kava under his counter, although it's legal here. I find it's a very mild stimulant. Like very mild. I haven't found it addictive. It dries the skin if you take it too often. I think the liver damage is based on only one, questionable, case. There's certainly nothing wrong with mine. How like Westerners to ban something harmless like kava while allowing the liberal use of alcohol, a drug that is addictive, causes illness and death, to self and others. Kava does none of these things. Of course the British introduced their wonder drug alcohol to Fiji and others island groups. Do we feel guily about this? Of course not

Kava was the only herb I found to be effective for anxiety (the other such as valerian our a waist of time in my opinion).

I found it helpful for general and social anxiety, it is not as effective as Benzos but doesn't have their annoying brain fogging effects.

I'm suprised that Fred found it stimulating, but then were all different!

makes you real thirsty

also great night vision..from someone who is night blind..dilates pupils, so all nakamals have very dim lite..like almost dark

Is addictive, but natives where it is traditionally grown have social taboos about drinking only at certain times..like when men gather on occasion in the evening. Taken in this way its seems OK
Where it has not been drunk in this way and its drunk whenever.. the addictions start
If you read the link in my old post that I've linked to, it has the medical reasons that kava is being banned

I had quite a varied response depending on the brand. But, when I found a good brand, it was EASILY the best supplement I've ever taken. It was stimulating and calming at the same time, and the effects increased over time. The full effects didn't start until the 4th day usually. I had nice anxiety reduction, decreases in impulsiveness, increased attention span, stable mood. It is my wonder herb.

I've combined it with alcohol a few times and I have extra long hangovers. Obviously not a good idea, especially with the liver toxicity issue.

When I use it safely in appropriate doses, it's given me no ill health. I think that whole liver toxicity issue is B.S to be honest... but i never use it for more than 2 week spurts, just to keep safe. There's no harm in staying on the safe side. I don't know what legally issues are in the UK, but in the US, I like to get the good stuff ordered from Hawaii. It's a shame most supplement companies have stopped selling it. Honestly, for me Kava is absolutely amazing.

In the US our super market caries Yogu brand Kava "Stress Relief" tea. It smells awful but I've found it calming. The effect usually lasts about an hour or so. According to the label it contains 30 % kavalactones--23.4 mgs.

I don't combine it with, say, klonopin or a glass of wine, but if I have to facilitate a group or do something else horrible or am just generally freaking, it helps.

The capsules make me really jittery, but so does valerian and chamomile. Go figure.
