Perika?

Posted by KaraS on August 5, 2004, at 23:54:58

I took my first 300 mg. pill of the Perika brand of St. John's Wort today. I have so little energy or motivation and I was hoping to get an immediate boost from Perika. I expected that the antidepressant effect would take a while but I also thought that it would be energizing within an hour of taking it. Instead, like so many other things, it put me to sleep and I wasted the whole afternoon. Is this something that will probably pass? Did any of you have this effect from Perika initially and then later get energy and motivation from it once your body adjusted to it? I'm so disappointed. I hope this will pass. (If not, it's probably back to the hard-core ADs for me - though none of them have worked all that well either so far.)

Also, I'm having a bit of nausea on this so far and I'm only at 300 mg. (1/3 the typical therapeutic dosage). Is that typical? Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did it go away fairly quickly?

I know it's late, now, but nausea is indeed the most likely side effect, and it does tend to pass rather quickly. If you're still taking it, using whatever you might ordinarily use for symptomatic treatment of upset stomach is fine. Peptobismol, Tums, whatever.

I stopped the Perika because I was feeling sluggish and brain dead on top of the nausea. I was really hoping it would give me some energy. Same thing with the Rhodiola. I don't know why I react paradoxically to so many things that others take and get activation from. It's so frustrating!

I'm kind of wondering the same thing....could be a characteristic of chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia (I don't draw a line between them, myself). It also contributes to drug sensitivity, in general. Considering the link to cannabinoid receptors, maybe we should just get some? Brownies, anyone?

My gut tells me that it doesn't have to do with my viral form of CFS (but then what does my gut know?). The brownies sound good anyway.
