L-Theanine's negative side effects

Posted by Beren One Hand on January 13, 2004, at 2:27:09

Two days ago I took 100 mg L-Theanine (purchased from Life Extension) and ten minutes later I felt light headed and got a tingling feeling in my head and my hands. It wasn't painful or anything, it almost felt like a super beer buzz. Although I felt fairly relaxed, I was not able to do any tasks that require concentration for the next five to six hours (like reading complex material or do my taxes).

Isn't L-Theanine suppose to make you relax WITHOUT interfering with your cognitive functions? I tried a lower dosage yesterday (50 mg) and got the same effect.

I also take NADH, which, like Theanine, also increases the production of serotonin. Am I suffering from an overdose of serotonin? Is the serotonin being stuck in my bloodstream instead of crossing over to the brain, thus causing this weird reaction?

On a related note, I always get a headache when I drink tea. I googled this topic and cannot find any medical reason why green tea would cause a headache or why Theanine would take away my concentration.

Help! If you have negative side effects from Theanine, please let me know... Thanks!

P.S. BTW, I also take Gingko, melatonin, and a super green food mix at night.

I dont think the theanine alone is causing that! i have taken it alone before and the effects are so mild and even un noticable in some.

I took 500mg of inositol and some L-theanine with GABA today and let me tell you with the inositol the other 2 seem to work alot stronger and i have felt a bit tried and mellow all day!!

I dont think theanine does anything to serotonin it just produces GABA (the calming neurotransmitter) so the serotonin syndrome is highly unlikely!! think it may be the combination of other things that add to the effect.

I thought L-Theanine only gives you a feeling of tiredness if you are deficient in it (it made me really sleepy the first time I tried it). So, maybe keep using it at night and see if that feeling goes away after a few days.

Are you still taking Theanine and is it still makin you sleepy? Theanine is suppose to make you relaxed without the drowsiness. I was hoping to use it during work but the drowsiness makes that impossible. I guess I just have to relax the old fashion way--take a nap at work. =)

Have you tried Picamilon or Piracitam? I feel great on Picamilon but Piracitam gave me a boost I didn't need or want. Both had the same anti-depressive effects for me.

I haven't tried those yet. I just tried Theanine because it is not suppose to have any side effects. Do you get any unwanted effects with the supplements you suggested?
