St. John's Wort

Posted by irishcatholic on September 4, 2003, at 12:30:35

Any experiences to share?
I've read a lot on the net and like most pharmaceutical meds there is plenty of conflicting experience & opinion out there.
I've had bad S/Es with SSRIs and wonder if the wort is worth a shot.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Caused me to have an itchy rash (very small pink bumps on my forearms), so I couldn't take it for long. But the person who recommended it to me thought very highly of it.

I used it briefly, was frankly concerned about it having similar properties to MAOI's, something I did not want as a part of my life.

I haven't heard positive reports from anyone I know that used it...BUT as it says, your mileage may vary.

No positive/negative results w/it, but I also respond very well to SSRI's.

St. John's wort generally tends to be helpful for mild/moderate depression. It's surely worth a shot, though -- just be sure to read the label of the product that you buy. It should be standardized to contain at least 0.3% hypericins. Also, a sublingual liquid form is preferable to capsules -- "Good Mood Tonic", manufactured by Herb Pharm, is an excellent product. It contains standardized extracts of St. John's wort, ashwagandha root, prickly ash bark, and skullcap.

I haven't tried it yet but this product from vitacost looks promising. www.vitacost.com/Store/Products/ProductDescription.cfm?SKUNumber=0181

The price sure isn't too great... the whole-food multinutrient I use is *much* more complete and costs about $30/month. "Super Earth Formula", manufactured by Bluebonnet.

St Johns Wort made me menstruate almost non-stop. It also renders birth control pills effectively useless. My psychiatrist told me that it also has to be very fresh and goes bad in two weeks. Perhaps you should try a diffrent SSRI.

i didnt know st john's'wort cancels out the pill! I tried it for a while for my panic disorder and it just made me more nervous. My fiancee said the same. We both ended up increasingly stressed when taking this pill. it really upset me as I really wanted a more natural alternative to effexor xr and xanax.

I've heard it can precipitate mania in some folks with bipolar disorder. Some manic depressives are very sensitive to anti-depressents of any sort - even St Johns Wort... I am of that type so I have been nervous about trying it, even on the Dr's recommendation.
