Should I take a statin?

Posted by Lamdage22 on June 18, 2022, at 2:27:10

LDL Cholesterol 192 mg/dl and it should be below 115 or even 100
HDL Cholesterol 47 mg/dl which equals standard risk. Higher than 60 would equal lower risk.
Total Cholesterol 262 mg/dl and it should be below 200

Triglycerides are 117 and it should be below 150. so that is good.

It has been that way for 10 years.

Is there an alternative to Statins?

Not to once again attempt to force Orthomolecular on you, but...

some doctors still do high dose niacin treatment for elevated cholesterol. Here in the US, somehow prescription niacin became ungodly expensive (pharma bros, yet again?), but...

hopefully, that isn't the case everywhere. use of niacin for cholesterol should involve regular monitoring...liver and lipids (obviously). Hoffer always recommended taking at least as much C as niacin.

I recall hearing something about strontium.

I also know that statins inhibit the production of co-enzyme Q10, and that they often cause muscle ache.

I think I don't tolerate Niacin very well psychologically. At least higher dose.

Other than that, you could say I'm doing Orthomolecular big time. I know it helps. And many our fathers help as well.

More fruits, vegetables, fiber and exercise, periodic fasting.....

But, it really depends on how much you want to avoid taking another medication.

I've read some more recent alternative and/or Orthomolecular info that emphasizes the importance of high dose (think 5 grams and up) vitamin C, in divided doses, along with additional antioxidants.

Hoffer was all about B3, mostly in niacin form. Pauling was all about C, often with extras (amino acids, E, that kind of thing).

Niacin for cholesterol was semi-popular in the US, for a while (from normal doctors). I think its still prescribed, here and there.

A Pauling approach to cardio health would probably require a lot less blood work than a Hoffer approach or the statin approach. I think the Pauling (C, additional antioxidants) approach might also be more compatible with prescribed statins, should those prove necessary.

:-) hope this helps

Eating oatmeal can lower LDL cholesterol.

Why are you avoiding statins?

A doctor offered to more thoroughly check my risk and artery health. I am probably going to agree. Statins are not without side effects.

I don't trust them and I will try all other avenues of improvement first including weight loss and supplements. When my weight was lower, so was my LDL.

I do recall reading that the statins do well at reducing cholesterol and such, but...

the data on avoiding cardio-events and longer lifespan is...less impressive. I don't know what that's about, but...

the Pauling fans often take their supplements and do whatever else is necessary (conventional treatments). I vaguely recall reading that niacin therapy interacts poorly with some cholesterol meds (probably statins? maybe not all of them?), so...there's that.

some people say to take coenzyme q10 with statins. others say the data would not indicate any benefits. and then...coq10 supplements sort of bother me, because the dosage varies wildly, there are the 2 different forms, different delivery systems, and...yeah. yeah. -tricksy-

ok. hope this helps...

I wouldn't want to ingest another man-made chemical, either. I think fish-oil would be a supplement to consider.

What are the side-effects of statins? I just started taking rosuvastatin (Crestor). How common are reduced sex-drive and lower testosterone levels as side-effects?

Statins can cause and many do horrible muscle pains especially in ones legs. The medical approach is to keep trying different ones to see if less cramping pain and keep lowering the doseage. Phillipa

I have no idea. That is why I am trying to solve it without them. I am getting a more thorough check of Arteriosclerosis markers and some arterys. It isnt just Cholesterol. If interested I can post what I am about to do with my doctor.

I am on fishoil. Thus, triglycerides are very good.
