Introduction to nicotinic receptors and nicotine

Posted by undopaminergic on September 28, 2021, at 14:23:48

I just finished reading this article, which is a good introductory review of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and nicotine addiction:
https://sci-hub.se/https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuropharm.2020.108256

It claims nicotine has a half-life of 20 hours in humans. That doesn't sound right to me. Wikipedia reports a half-life of only 1-2 hours, although it mentions a metabolite, cotinine, with a half-life of 20 hours.

Interesting. Apparently cotinine is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor and has antidepressant properties.

From Wikipedia: "Similarly to nicotine, cotinine binds to, activates, and desensitizes neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, though at much lower potency in comparison. It has demonstrated nootropic and antipsychotic-like effects in animal models. Cotinine treatment has also been shown to reduce depression, anxiety, and fear-related behavior as well as memory impairment in animal models of depression, PTSD, and Alzheimer's disease."
