Generic Nardil

Posted by atypical on December 15, 2017, at 19:37:15

So after many years on Nardil, the brand name is on back order and it is going to take a few weeks to fill an Rx. So for a month I have been on the Gavis/Lupin phenelzine. Much better on the wallet. But I have come to realize that it is stronger than brand name, at least in my experience. The clues that I have noticed are my weight increasing, especially around the stomach, a lower sex drive, and more drowsiness during the day. I finally came to this conclusion recently. I have stopped extra sweets and increased exercise, to no avail. I am sort of upset at myself for not noticing this earlier. But what could I have done? I am going to see the Dr. on Monday and suggest that I reduce the dose of the generic by half a tablet. I hope that reduces the side effects. Am I on the right track here?

Not sure about generic Nardil but I have different reactions to different generics on other meds. Weight gain is common in Nardil though.

I think reducing the dose is prob worth a try (just watch for depression coming back). I'd you've tried one of the generics you could try the other next time and see if it works more like brand.

The other thing you could try depending on your doctor would be to add some metformin (diabetes med that has been shown to stave off weight gain from many psych drugs). My doc wanted me to get it from my general doctor through so I never tried it in spite of having some minor med related weight gain over the years.

I know the frustration about putting on weight. One day theyll figure out which gut bug would help or which receptor to target to make fat "brown" so it burns off rather than store. (then they can get the baldness cure ;)

Good luck!

I can second that. Although i would prefer if you would try to get off Nardil altogether. If you (think) you have to take it, Metformin can counter the weight gain nicely. I have the suspicion that it causes my hair to fall out but id rather be bold than fat. I am reducing my meds in regular intervals. But for the time being i am on this stuff and thats why i take Metformin.
