One Year Brintellix Treatment Report

Posted by FloydAS on March 18, 2016, at 10:42:56

I've been on Brintellix for a year so I figured I'd provide the board a summary of my experience thus far, for what it's worth.

Previously I've been a short term dose of Lexapro years ago and more recently on every dose of Zoloft imaginable for GAD with only minimal success. Ultimately I slowly decreased my dosage until I was completely off the Zoloft, which during that time I became quite unpredictable. I was highly impulsive, and short tempered. Not easy to be around at home and at work people noticed my impulsive mental state.

My PDoc decided to try me on Brintellix. I have not been diagnosed with depression specifically or have not been told that my doc suspects that I have any signs of depression. Personally I feel that's a definite possibility. I was placed on 5 mg initially and quickly increased to 10 mg. The initial dosages significantly improved my mood and made me more socially talkative and more outgoing at work than I've ever been before. It was quite a good feeling and I felt GREAT.

Unfortunately that initial feeling waned but I hit a good equilibrium with my impulsiveness and anxiety once I increased to 20 mg dosage which I have remained to this day.

One person I trust at work who's had his own issues that I helped him work through noted that he could see a major difference/improvement and stability in my thinking and actions after I started on Brintellix and that I've been consistent ever since.

And on the most positive note, I was rated top performer in my organization by our regional president through our annual performance review process for 2015 so I think I'm in a very good place now.

I realize this med may not be right for everyone, but at least for me at this particular time it has been a success. Hopefully it will continue to be effective for a good while longer.

Hey FloydAS,

That's really great your doing so well and responding to the Brintellix! And thank you for taking the time to report your success story here. I think often times people are inclined to stop posting once they're in remission. They're out living their lives, making up for lost time, and who can blame them? :)

But a quick shout out to Babble with a "hey I beat this thing with treatment X" sure would be helpful to some of us I would think. So thank you.

Jade

Allow me to clarify that Brintellix is not the only med that I'm on, but it has been the most recent addition that has made the biggest difference.

I'm also taking the following for the indicated reasons:

Topamax 50 mg twice a day - migraine prevention
Propranolol 40 mg twice a day - essential tremor
Focalin XR 10 mg once daily but only as needed - adult ADD
Xanax XR 0.5 mg - taken only as needed and since taking Brintellix I rarely ever take this any longer

The only complaint I have is weight gain. I haven't read much weight gain complaint with Brintellix but I have put on the pounds since taking it and I'm having difficulty losing any weight.

Floyd,

I agree with the comments that Jade made in response to your post. Thank you for sharing your story with us and for letting us know about the improvements that you've been noticing since you've been taking 20 mg of Brintellix along with the other medications that you've been taking. I think that stories like yours can be immensely helpful for those with mental health conditions who are struggling, as stories written by or about those who are living well with a mental health condition can give those who are struggling a sense of hope that the worst of their difficulties might not continue on indefinitely and that they too might one day get to a point where their lives and their stories can serve as inspirations for others. So, thank you again for sharing your story with us. I wish you continued success.

Thanks for clarifying that :)

I'm struggling with Zyprexa weight gain, I know what a pain that is.

I noticed youre taking Focalin and Xanax. Im thinking of switching from Ritalin to Focalin and from Klonopin to Xanax. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jade

I love Brintellix! I've taken 20 mg. for about seven months now. Much more clear headed than the lexapro I had been on prior.

Only hitch is I need a little zofran because the nausea is persistent.

Glad it's working for you :)

As for the Focalin, I have done very well on it. Originally my Pdoc started me on Concerta. That lasted all of a week and a half. I could not tolerate the jittery side effects. Focalin XR has been very smooth and tolerable for me.

I have never tried Klonopin so I can't compare it to Xanax. I have been on immediate release Xanax and now the XR version. They are not the same. The XR will not really provide any immediate relief of an attack but will maintain a good baseline to avoid onset of attacks for some people that take it. As I stated before I don't take it often anymore, only when I am going through a bad stretch of heightened stress and anxiety.

I hope that helps.

Me too. My first ER visit, not a good day.

I just went back to Lexapro and the rest of my cocktail: Wellbutrin XR, Deplin, Trileptal, Klonopin, and medical marijuana for anxiety as prescribed by my pdoc.

I'm jealous. Wellbutrin and marijuana both cause crazy anxiety in me. I know many benefit from both.
