my meds are the same but i asked about Marplan, she said it's very effective, maybe ill switch but i've been on prozac for years, it takes like 3 weeks to flush fluoxetine out of the system before taking an MAOI

she told me there's a diet which i can' eat aged cheeze and some types of wine, but prozac is at the max dose, and i have no idea what the max dose is for Marplan, its pretty high i think its like 110mg is the max

someone i know thinks i should stay on prozac and not use an old generation antidepressant with a diet restriction because thinks i would accidnetly eat cheeze while on Marplan, this person wants me to be stable, but i am where i am, i don't fight much anymore and comply, but still i've read Marplan is a very good antidepressant better than prozac, its not stimulating like Parnate, i'll keep that in my memory archives for future considerations

i've research this, you can't drink alcoholic beverages on Marplan, does anyone know why? Does it increase GABA too much?

I've never taken Marplan, just parnate. I drink some, mostly white wine. Red wine and draft beers are no-no's because of tyramine. other than that, drinking heavily while on anti-depressants is not recommended for any AD, since alcohol is a depressant.

Avoiding cheese and aged meats isn't a hard thing to do. It's not like some extreme dietary restrictions - like no sugar, no carbs, no wheat. And small amounts of cheese are generally ok anyway - like some parmesan sprinkled on pasta - though probably best to avoid aged cheese altogether (mozzarella is not aged, so pizza is fine, if you like pizza). I actually eat cheese a lot, in small amounts - mostly on salads - greek with feta, caesar with parmesan. I've never had a problem, but I probably should be more careful.

The point is that the diet issues are not the big deal people make them out to be. If prozac isn't working, then what's the big deal with going off it for a while (the washout period) and starting something new?

Dont worry about Cheese

Dont worry about the cheese too much.

You can carry emergency Nifedipine in your wallet.

I wouldnt recommend more than 5mg Nifedipine though. Dont take the whole pill unless your BP is way out there.

I put the nifedipine on my hand and licked it when i needed to.

You can cautiously try which foods are ok and which are not (if you have emergency nifedipine on hand). Most are OK.

For mild hypertensive crises 5mg Nifedipine, for strong ones 10.

Dont overdo it though. With both the food and the nifedipine.

Most foods are ok. Only the most extreme ones are not. At least thats what it was like in my case with Nardil.

Ask your doctor about the nifedipine and dont let it keep you from trying a potentially life saving medicine.

I'm afraid of pepperoni and blue cheese.

So are you going to try Marplan?

What does your doctor say about Nifedipine?

Keep us updated.

thanks everyone for posting, appreciate it

My doc said it's very effective but i would have to be on a MAOI diet, I'm sure a lot of people here know what foods are on the list. Someone i know, thinks i should stay on prozac, thinks it's helped and not flush it and start Marplan, and like i said they think ill accidnetly eat junk food with cheese and other various things with Marplan, also you can't really drink alcohol with it, yet with other MAOI 's you can

It's definitely a medication choice i would like to take, it's not a controlled subtance and over it looks like a good med for depression.

I'm not seeing my doc for while.......but that will definitely be a future consideration ill try to wean off prozac

I believe SLS and I were trying Marplan (isocaboxazid) at the same time several years ago.
Unfortunately, I never had any luck with it after a fairly decent trial at the maximum recommended dose (60mg/day) and returned to Nardil, which worked again.

YMMV,
