Hmm you sure sound alert and on track, which surprises me. Many anti-medication threads are created by hopeless quacks.

I may try to go off medications, too, but i won't force it and give it plenty of time. I have an arrangement with my doctor to always have as needed medication if i figure out i am too unstable.

I like your idea of having a baseline and not allowing things to get any worse than this. This is good.

What do you do when your symptoms return?

I try to live as described in my previous posting -
proper work, diet, exercise, friends, hobbies, yoga, lifestyle

for a while (month) i stopped all of the above to see if there was any dependency - and I was still fine
mainly, i need to stay away certain substances that would trigger symptoms - such as high doses of high potency pre work out supplements

If things really start to deteriorate badly taking medications does not help me
One session of Iyengar Yoga with an experienced teacher and it will calm me down and remove irritability as well as bring back focus and concentration

(btw I am fairly fit now - I have also lost fat and gained muscle - I have a much reduced appetite - I have more energy
Short term memory issues and dullness issues are reduced but present )

Not all the folks posting here should go off their meds. It could be a condition which requires meds forever. In my opinion only this is not a helpful thread. Phillipa

I have specifically mentioned details about my particular case involving zyprexa and what steps I took.

I do not appreciate my posting being targeted.

Have a nice day !

I, for one, appreciate your contribution.

For some people, the treatment strategies you employ and the changes in lifestyle that you have made, can significantly improve mental health. I think it is always important to address negative psychosocial stressors. Even if doing so does not significantly alter the trajectory of the illness immediately, it might help to maximize the potential for future treatments to work and prevent relapse.

A lot of people aren't interested in getting off meds because they believe they have a lifelong medical condition and that their diagnosis describes them well. The people who want to get off the psych drugs tend to be the ones who disagree with the medical model and see their problems as emotional distress that can be transformed/healed, not something they are stuck with forever.

If you want more of the second point of view, check out the Mad In America website: http://www.madinamerica.com. This site was started by Robert Whitaker, author of the books *Anatomy Of An Epidemic* and *Mad In America*. He was a journalist who initially believed the medical model but then came to see things differently after doing in-depth research.

I don't think people critical of medication are quacks at all. They are usually folks for whom the dominant model hasn't worked, or who have actually been harmed/traumatized by it. They simply reach different understandings than the mainstream, about experiences that are very personal and unique to each of us. And there are also clinicians who are critical, because they have discovered the value of alternative approaches and the severe limitations of medications in many cases.

Also, many people who successfully get off psych drugs and recover from their problems don't really talk about it. They just move on with their lives and stop using the MH system. That's another reason why the "mental health community" tends to be people who have very specific, biological-minded opinions about their issues (and those of other people with the same labels).

You might also want to check out the Icarus Project. They have reached alternative understandings of "madness".
