Anything for Anger-that doesn't Zombify?

Posted by BrainDamage on May 25, 2014, at 19:29:05

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could recommend anything for Anger, that doesn't completely crush other emotions & leave one sedate & unable to function?

All I can think of is Quetiapine

What's your diagnosis? Depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar, schizo, personality disorders?

I ask because the answer could vary from SSRIs to stimulants to benzos to anticonvulsants, antipsychotics...

What about Lamictal? Low dose Abilify? My roommate in a psych hospital years ago was put on Abilify for what he called "anger problems" and he said he liked it.

Yup, lithium definitely helps my anger and isn't too zombifying at low doses. I'm on 900mg but lower has helped my anger too.

Risperdal and Invega are obvious choices. Zyprexa can work extremely well. Geodon has squelcheedd rage for me. Haldol, obviously. Antipsychotics are going to be your best bet...

I would think a low(ish) dose of any antipsychotic. Old or new, the choice would be based on how much (if any) sedation you want/need, your weight, other meds, other symptoms, etc.

I take Abilify. It certainly helps tranquilize rage. So do anticonvulsants. Trileptal comes to mind; Lamictal, Depakote. These could be used with a tranquilizer, probably with lower doses of the neuroleptic if the problem is mostly rage.

I personally wouldn't want Seroquel because...wow..that stuff is sedating...but maybe the xr is better?

I seem to recall reading something somewhere about high dose buspar, but I could be wrong. Buspar can be added to some antipsychotics to improve mood and anxiety and also tolerability.

Good luck!

I live in the UK in an area where Health Care is not great!

I think I have some form of Bi-Polar
Anyway, squeezing Meds out of UK Psychs is a real challenge!
I am on Lamactal, which clearly isn't doing much

I tried to get my Psych to prescribe low dose Olanzapine, without success
Maybe I can get her to prescribe Quetiapine XR
I imagine Triptal might help, but no chance of it getting prescribed

If you can't tolerate prescription dose Lithium, you could also try Lithium Orotate.

If you take an antipsychotic, i would use Quetiapine.

Agressive? That's interesting. I have a severe rage problem. I like to break things. It slows down my angry impulses just enough to think through the situation and use my CBT training. So far NAC is the only thing I have ever taken that hasn't given me a drugged feeling. When I take it at night for insomnia it helps me sleep. When I take in the morning for anxiety it seems to brighten my mood and slightly motivate me. The effects are so subtle I often wonder if I am getting a placebo effect. I don't endorse or profit from any supplement supplier. Seems that Bluebonnet brand NAC is the only one that works for me. I noticed a strong sulfur smell when you open the bottle. Seems that if it is not present, it won't work.

I had initially pretty amazing effects, which just turned into suicidal rage on day 3 of supplementation :(
