Anyone get nightmares from taking meds?

Posted by Phillipa on January 20, 2014, at 9:26:24

Since I only take small doses of meds why is every night nightmares and when wake I'm feeling bad. Seems strange as since no meds during the day as the day goes on I feel better. Then when eat I start to feel worse. I don't get it. I keep thinking it's the synthroid I take about 7am when wake and then go back to sleep. As bedtime is 3am. This has been going on for three years. And I've questioned the synthroid and the endo says no. the pdoc is an idiot and doesn't care. Phillipa

I don't get nightmares per se, but I have weird dreams.

Phillipa, just an outside observation, I do not see anything in your description here that would point suspicion toward any of the meds. It looks more like disease pathology than it does medication effects, to me anyway.

Any of your meds can and do mess up sleep architecture. Even tiny doses can do that. Especially when there are other issues going on.

Phillipa, I think bleauberry is most likely right. Medications are notorious for disturbing sleep architecture, but actual nightmares are very probably due to unresolved trauma. I also had them almost every night; after some time in therapy, they disappeared completely.

I know you would prefer not to have therapy; an alternative might be to try a low dose of Prazosin at night.

I had nightmares and disturbing dreams all the time when I started therapy. They were mostly about him - my therapist - rejecting me, assaulting me, yelling at me, treating me with contempt. I was working through all this childhood trauma stuff in my dreams and in my relationship to him.

After a while in therapy, the dreams stopped. Now I barely remember my dreams.

Strangely, when I'm not doing well (for years at a stretch) I didn't ever notice having any dreams.

I could tell something special was happening when I started clomipramine 1 year ago: I started having and remembering my dreams! It is interesting: I know depression screws up the whole sleeping process, but don't really know enough to interpret the significance of a dream state resurfacing in my life.

I had a nightmare that my mother was cooking for a party and she was putting Murphy's oil soap in all of the food.
I had to keep people from getting poisoned. Weird....

Those are the kind I mean. Weird stuff that makes no sense and you spend time trying to figure out what the heck? Phillipa

Why bother trying to figure it out? Dreams are weird by definition. Most dreams are not very memorable unless they hit some deep emotional spot. In that case, they're disturbing, but pretty obvious also.

But I also have good dreams -- some beautiful place -- and interesting dreams - some action/adventure kind of story.

I love the dreamworld and sometimes even find nightmares interesting

but one summer lost to bad meds, i took serzone + luvox (not at the same time) and one of them caused me to have horrible nightmares about killing baby animals
