I've taken both. Both worked well. Take valium still now but still wake after 4 hours & take second half of dose then. Phillipa

Benzos do anything good for sleep architecture, but having said that I understand that one could have other things to worry about.

Zolpidem is better for me, but too short acting, and the same reservations apply to it perhaps.

I've been on both. Valium has a much longer half-life than Ativan, so it's much better for a full night's sleep.

I have only tried Ativan, which has worked well for me to combat MAOI insomnia. It lasts long enough (half-life = 12 hours) to make it through the night. I use 2.0 mg. Some people might need 4.0 mg.

Valium might not be as good for sleep as Ativan is. The benzodiazepines are not all equal with respect to hypnotic properties. I also think that it lasts too long into the next day (half-life = 48 hours).

Again - I have never tried Valium, so I cannot provide you with a real life comparison. For the shorter half-life alone, I would try Ativan first. If it doesn't work for you, then you have alternatives.

GABAnergic medications such as benzos can contribute to treatment resistance and make depression worse (they are depressants after all and they upregulate NMDA receptors)

Sometimes the body deprives itself of sleep on purpose, unfortunately, the body sometimes does this, it seems, to provoke a seizure or deep sleep to get itself back into balance

Where might I find some scientific literature on this?

Thanks.
