I have only tried Ativan, which has worked well for me to combat MAOI insomnia. It lasts long enough (half-life = 12 hours) to make it through the night. I use 2.0 mg. Some people might need 4.0 mg.

Valium might not be as good for sleep as Ativan is. The benzodiazepines are not all equal with respect to hypnotic properties. I also think that it lasts too long into the next day (half-life = 48 hours).

Again - I have never tried Valium, so I cannot provide you with a real life comparison. For the shorter half-life alone, I would try Ativan first. If it doesn't work for you, then you have alternatives.
