Where would you go for anxiety/depression?

Posted by Zatar on June 10, 2013, at 8:51:55

If you could go to any clinical or university setting anywhere in the US that pulls together functional imaging, auxiliary treatments such as rTMS, genetic studies, and top p-docs that can use and prioritize this information to determine a treatment plan for generalized anxiety, social anxiety, dysthymia, ADD, learning disabilities, adjustment issues, family history of OCD, schizophrenia, panic disorder, GAD, SAD, depression, etc. WHERE WOULD YOU GO? WHICH DOCS WOULD YOU SEE? Names of centers in the southeast are especially appreciated.

While I know that functional imaging is just in its infancy, it may help give us a clue as to where to go from here.

I'd really appreciate input as we need a GREAT center to take our young adult daughter who is losing hope and therefore resisting help for her multiple issues. CBT isn't working and we feel she needs an optimal medication regimen to get her into a better place to accept CBT. Our local p-docs are run of the mill and too busy to put the time and effort into thinking outside the box.

Ideally, at this wonderful center the p-docs should collaborate and pull EVERYTHING together rather than just looking at one area. We need a plan of action.

Thank you, Babblers.

Emory University is supposed to be cutting edge. The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston is where TMS for depression was first studied. A new form of TMS, Deep TMS, which penetrates much more deeply into the brain than standard TMS, will soon be available.

I emailed Mark George, MD at MUSC a couple of weeks ago and am very impressed with their Brain Stimulation program. But how do they fare with PET/fMRI scans to help determine medications needed for neuropsychiatric disorders or medication regimens? Some research places are more research oriented and less clinically oriented.

I believe it takes a special p-doc who will take his/her time, look at EVERYTHING impacting things and go the extra mile(s) with an individual patient that we need. Not your 15 minute type.

Thanks!

What about Mayo Rochester, Mass General, or Stanford? Mayo has David Mrazek, MD who is into pharmacogenomics, but I don't know much else about their psychiatry department.

Thanks, Babblers!

I'd like to add a vote for Johns Hopkins, just on the basis of one patient's experience. They are reportedly extremely thoughtful and respectful, and work co-operatively over medications and therapy. They will also have deep TMS soon, if they don't already. I don't know to what extent they use imaging techniques, but they do use genetic testing to help with medication choices.

McLean Hospital does a lot of work with fMRI. But I don't know if they use it in their practice, or just for clinical trials.
The Amen Clinics use SPECT. They have an office in Atlanta now. Their Reston, Virginia clinic uses qEEG and neurofeedback.
