Augmenting Magnesium with SSRI - Any issues?

Posted by prefect on January 23, 2013, at 20:55:22

I've decided to start taking a Magnesium supplement (specifically Magnesium Bisglycinate)due to some research I've read on its effect on anxiety.
Currently on 100 mg Luvox/day.
Does anyone have experience combining magnesium supplements with an SSRI and were there any negative side effects from this? Is this a safe combination? And if yes, how beneficial was it?

I take 200mg of mangesium (as magnesium citrate) every day along with an SSRI and some other meds.

I havent noticed any side effects. I havent noticed any change in mood, but i wasnt looking for it, as I was taking the magnesium for general health benifits, not speciaifical for anxiety or depression.

Do you take it at any particular time of day or with meals?

I take 300mg of magnesium citrate also and not for anxiety/depression. Use it as laxative. I think it works. If it has the added bonus of helping anxiety it is much needed. Phillipa

The only thing I can tell you without researching prefect is that magnesium is one of the best laxatives there is. Be prepared. ;)

Hello Prefect,

I've been taking a citrate form of magnesium at 300-400 mg BID/TID for half a year now and I'm also a +10 year user of the SSRI sertraline.

I haven't had any negative side-effects other than the occassional laxative effect, but I haven't noticed any major positive effect either.

When I feel agitated I feel it calms me down a bit for a brief period though so magnesium may be worth a try for you if you're suffering from anxiety, but don't expect any miracles.

As far as I know it's totally safe to combine an SSRI with magnesium, but it's best not to take both at the same time, since magnesium may slow down or hinder the absorption of the SSRI to a certain extent.

I combined 600 mg of magnesium citrate with Parnate so you should be fine. The magnesium was actually more effective than the Parnate for my depression so I stopped the Parnate.

I'd never heard of magnesium bisglycinate. Interesting. Another highly bioavailable form of magesium is l-threonate. It's only been on the market a little over a year.

Yes, I take magnesium supplement (in a range of 50mg to 200mg per day).

I find it especially helpful for psychic pain (when my thoughts start to hurt).

It doesn't work too well if my thoughts are dark and or slow, but it does help when I am in agitated / mixed sorts of moods with anxiety, insomnia and mental pain.

Jeez...The common theme here is laxative effect! I have borderline IBS that leans on the side of over zealous fluidity of output down south, in addition to my anxiety! hmm.

What about the sedative effect? Do you find it makes you drowsy? Can I have it within a couple of hours of drinking (I enjoy a shot of whiskey or two a night) or will I get knocked out?

That's really interesting Hugh. You always seem to post articles about good things I haven't heard about, keep it up!

Magnesium l-threonate is less likely than other forms of magnesium to cause diarrhea. I find it somewhat stimulating rather than sedating. The first time I took it was in the evening, and I had a lot of trouble falling asleep that night.

I've spent years looking for the magic bullet for depression. Maybe one of these days I'll find it.

I personally take it with meals. I do that because I also take thyroid hormone which is supposed to be taken hours apart from food and magnesium.

Not sure which is optimal but works for me.

Either way. It doesn't seem to matter.

I've been taking Life Extension magnesium-L-threonate for a couple months, though not consistently. I'm not sure about feeling any different. But then again I don't know what works anymore. I came across this site. I think I may try it. Who knows? If I feel any different, I'll let you know.
