switching off prozac back on to zoloft

Posted by bralin on December 22, 2012, at 7:52:13

Hello everyone. I am new to the board and would like to introduce myself.
I have been on zoloft for over 10 yrs for depression and just recently switched to prozac ( over 2 mths ago. ) I switched to see if prozac would give me more energy and not so tired all the time. I am getting worse on prozac and want to go back to zoloft.
My question is can I just switch off prozac back to my old dosage of zolft or do I have to wean off it or something?
Thanks for your help. I just feel like I am about to go back into depression if I don't do something and I know that zoloft works so much better for me. Don't know why I keep looking for something better anyways.
Thanks,,bralin

What dosage of Prozac are you taking? Some people go as high as 60 mg/day.

You should be able to cross over from Prozac to Zoloft directly without a taper. Prozac stays in the system long enough such that you are actually cross-titrating. I doubt you will experience any withdrawal effects.

What dosage of Zoloft will you be taking? Adding Wellbutrin might solve the energy problem. This combination is sometimes referred to as "Welloft".

Please post your results.

Thanks.

Crossing over is what I always did also. Start the zoloft low as you stop or wean down on the prozac if your prozac dose was extremly high as it does stay in the body for a few weeks. Phillipa

I neglected to mention that I think you should start Zoloft at a low dosage (25-50 mg/day) and titrate gradually. This would help reduce the appearance of SSRI side effects and also reduce the risk of developing serotonin syndrome.

If you're taking more than 20mg of prozac, get the dose down to 20mg, and hold it there for a week, then start Zoloft at 50mg a day and hold it there for atleast 2 weeks.

If you feel you need somthing to boost the Zoloft, after you have stabalised the dose back at your old level, ask your doctor about the possability of adding an NARI (Welbutrin, nortriptyline, desipramine) to the Zoloft to give you the double whamie of seretonin and noradrenalin reuptake inhibition. For energy, I'd probably go Welbutrin 300mg/day.

yea prozac stays in the body longer....actually its longest half life i think for ssri's....prozac was good for me...when it worked...i was on 80mg...brighted up my world to warmness. But Zolofy is less....well...prozac can be stimulating in some aspects, zoloft is WIDELY used, i know alot of people who take it....also lezepro, there popular amoung docs.

wait till its out and then start zoloft...or viibryd. Your doctor should know what to do...if he doenst he doenst then he probaly doesnt know what he's talking about.
