Proglumide and devazepide.

Was just curious if anyone's used them for anxiety, as there is vague research indicating it may be effective against cases of anxiety that began with unexplainable GI symptoms.

Some agents such as clonazepam and clomipramine indirectly modulate CCK

I've also been looking for natural stuff that would act as CCK Antagonist, as I would likely not take a real medication that would be a CCK antagonist, because it just feels like a drastic move and who knows what the consequences would be.

All I seem to have come up with is Gotu Kola, and haven't managed to figure out if it's supposed to be a CCK agonist or antagonist. The resource material just refers to it as a remedy for Gastrointestinal problems and a nerve tonic, an attribute used by folk medicine docs when referring to every herbal remedy there is out there.

I'm just mildly interested because there's some research on the internet indicating certain anxiety disorders are related to CCK and may be resolved by CCK antagonists. These cases usually began with gastrointestinal changes before the anxiety.

Mine did.

Interesting. I've often wondered if my gut was causing the anxiety and not the other way around. BTW, I had my gall bladder removed about 6 years ago.

In what ways were your GI symptoms different from IBS?

I had my first panic attack a week after bizzare and sudden gastorintestinal changes. Tests showed extremely high liver enzymes. Tested negative for all types of infectious hepatitis (including mono). No jaundice. Liver enzymes subsided after a few months. That was 16 years ago. Last 4 years I have developed symptoms indicative of relapsing remitting IBS.

Have struggled with anxiety in one form or another for the past 16 years.

Tricyclic antidepressants are sometimes used for IBS. Perhaps using a TCA would address the IBS and panic attacks at the same time. Imipramine is generally the first choice, but clomipramine is used as well.

The symptoms were pretty much classic for biliary obstruction; a HIDA scan showed that was the case, so the gall bladder was taken out.

Part of the HIDA scan was in injection of cholecystokinen which, aside from making my gut wrench up, also induced a lot of anxiety, some sweating, etc.

Now, many years later and sans gall-bladder, when I feel tense and anxious and start sweating a bit and my gut clenches up (often with increased bowel motility) I wonder if the tail is wagging the dog and not the other way around.

As Prefect noted, check out Proglumide. Might have to try that sometime as an experiment.
