Hi Phillipa.

Thanks!

I am doing better and better, now that I have settled in on the optimal dosages of each drug I take. I am convinced that minocycline produced a robust improvement when I first began taking it. However, I am not convinced that it continues to contribute to my improvement. Optimizing my dosing with prazosin has made a huge difference. At some point, I will want to test for the contribution of minocycline to my treatment response. I don't necessarily have a desire to be without it, but, rather, wish to be free of the red-tape that regulates its chronic administration. My doctor says that he must write a new script without refills each month for minocycline and requires an expensive follow up visit before prescribing it. He deals with many Lyme Disease cases and treats his patients with chronic antibiotic therapy. Some regulatory agency is requiring him to follow these rules. I know nothing more than this. Meanwhile, my pharmacy sees prescriptions for tetracylcines with refills. I guess if I claimed that I had acne, I would be okay.

:-(

My power and cable service has been interrupted by Sandy. I will have only occasional access to the Internet.

Forgot where you live I should have known. I also understand the chronic administration of antibiotics. Yes there are a lot of acne boards and young people on it for years at a time for acne. I was given it for perioral dermatitis. Might try this diagnosis. As it tends to recurr. I was given one refill at the time. Still have a full bottle 70mg. I do hope others in your family are okay. Please be well. It's the FDA with chronic antibiotics and the development of all the super bugs. I'm sure you know this. Phillipa/Jan

The issue with long term use of broad spectrum antibiotics is the spread of super resistant bacteria - both the colonisation of your body, and in the wider community.

For example, if you were to get pneumonia now, its much more likely to me multiple drug resistant than if i were to get pneumonia.

That might make you reconsider minocycline for mild acne, but shouldnt deter them from using it for a serious psychiatric indication if it is working.

Risk vs advantages as usual. Phillipa

Thats it phillips, unfortunatly, doctors and opharmacists tend tio focus on the risks more than the potential benifits in many cases

Jono seriously if teens are on this med for years for acne and it works why not. Also in severe infections I don't think the tetracyclines are used much anymore. Phillipa

I agree Phillipa - if it works then use it!
