on meds now...but in the future?

Posted by Christ_empowered on October 12, 2012, at 0:58:30

Is there a point at which you can break free from meds? I'm bipolar or schizoaffective, depending on who you ask. There's a strong, but low-level, psychotic component. I think its gotten worse because of intense stress+social isolation.

Now, let's say I stick with vocational rehab, get a small job, build a social life, and stay out of a mental hospital. Let's say this continues for years. When will it be time to say "time to taper!," or does that day *ever* come in modern day psychiatry?

You know what, I think it's totally possible no matter what the pdocs say. The meds can get you to a point where you make positive habits, positive thinking, and good life choices for enough time that they become second nature, and then maybe the meds can fall by the wayside. That's my hope for myself one day, anyway. While I do have a biological illness, I have grown into profoundly rigid ways of thinking and depressive habits that also keep me in bad places. I would like to see if the right med combo helps me work on those things enough to where I can reduce or even eliminate meds.

That said, I'm not looking to do it anytime soon. Remission is precious. Don't want to mess with it.

Being young no telling what the future holds. CE if you stabalize and become happy in a career, job, family, town, etc. I feel you may achieve your dream. As when so functional didn't need meds. Can you believe 1.25mg of xanax every other day? That was it. Not even beer. Phillipa

I think I'm going to a family doc from now on. My shrink is OK and all, but psychiatry has screwed me over so royally in the past that now, I'd much rather just deal with a family doc. Makes sense to me.

I would still try to find a great pdoc. It takes work and time, but it goes a long way.

I also wouldn't worry about going off meds just yet. I think you mentioned you're in your late 20's? That's a stressful time in general, regarding career, not be quite settled yet, and thinking about having a family. If you're mentally in a decent place, stay on what you're taking, find a good pdoc, and start planning where you'd like to live and what you'd like to do. I know, stressful! But, baby steps. No need to be stressed over whether or not to take meds if they're not causing any problems.

Us bipolars and schizoaffectives tend to be on medication for life. For all my meds, all I get is a slight tremor. Without almost any cost, why would I ever stop my medication?

I've had 2 major bipolar blowouts, with psychotic features. ADHD ruled my childhood. But since 1999, the OCD has been the biggest pest, hardly leaving me any peace.

I've tried that many times over the last 15 years. Every single time I went nuts. Don't even want to try it again, for fear of losing anouther job to it.
