Any supplement additions to my meds/brain zaps!

Posted by mogger on May 26, 2012, at 12:58:43

It seems whenever I add a supplement to my medication regime I get brain zaps and then unfortunately I get scared about what is going on as I have no idea what is happening and so I stop the supplement. I tried taking a broccoli and blueberry extract and got brain zaps which is unfortunate as I was benefiting from them. I just started using a light box which also has a positive effect on my mood but I feel like I might have to stop as I am getting brain zaps. Does anyone have this experience? Perhaps it is an interaction with my medication? I have a theory that perhaps my regime is too serotonergic and any addition of a supplement that causes more serotonin i.e. light therapy or fruit or vegetable extracts could be causing a slight serotonin syndrome? However I usually have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to medication so that could be me just worrying. By the way a light box is a powerful AD for me at least I have found. Many thanks for your thoughts. Mogger

Here is med regime:

45mg Buspar
45mg Remeron
125mg Zoloft
300mg Lamictal
.5mg Klonopin

Do these things happen at any particular time of day? It is almost as if you are going through Klonopin withdrawal. I really can't account for it. You could try adding magnesium. It might reduce glutamatergic hyperactivity.

That's interesting that you should say that Scott as I have been coming down on my klonopin for 6 months from 1.5mg to .5mg. However the last adjustment I made was over a month ago. It has been awful coming down on klonopin. Just out of curiosity why does it sound like a withdrawal symptom?

Mogger think of the half life of klonopin. And l.5mg is quite a bit. Some have withdrawal some don't. Did you google signs of klonopin withdrawal. I surely wouldn't think that veggies, and natural extracts could hurt. I wonder if med checker does supplements also. But I myself don't react well to fishoil if take for more than a few days. I got the brain zaps on withdrawal from Paxil. Usually they are associated with SSRI discontinuation syndrome. I do not think they are dangerous in themselves, but certainly can cause some discomfort. I'd say just wait it out but call the pdoc just to make sure it's ok to do that.

you might be a rapid metabolizer of zoloft or buspar. What about splitting up the dose?
zoloft has a fairly long halflife.
I take a lot of supplements. Havent had an issue with zaps on them.
NAC and chromium picolinate seem to help with depression. vitamin c and b seem to help with energy.

Sure enough I ate a lot of dried goji berries last night and woke up to brain zaps! Good point about zoloft and buspar I shall try that. I take 5400 mg of NAC a day for my OCD and it is extremely helpful. Have you tried Chromium Picolinate for depression?
