My friend needs a cutting edge psychiatrist (think outside the box) ASAP in Phoenix. She has history of life long major depression and bouts of panic attacks(bad genes, no trauma) and fractured her skull in 3 places in 1996 (car wreck), 4 shoulder surgeries (from sporting injuries)so on top of her life long depression and panic attack bouts, she's in constant pain all the time. She's only 21, I'm much older, I too have battle of life long history of major depression/panic attacks (no trauma either), but didn't realize I had a bad psychiatrist until I was 30 years old, so thought I would post this for her b/c she's so depressed and her psychiatrist is awful and very big into watch and wait for several(4-6) weeks before increasing a basic SSRI medicine (like prozac). Any great phoenix psychiatrists, ideally one who can help with her chronic pain too or just someone who thinks outside the box and deals with patients who are beyond just an SSRI! thx!

if it wont worsen her depression going on gabapentin might help 2fold, one with the pain and two with the panic attacks/anxiety.
also lexapro i think might help with depression and anxiety.
maybe some klonipin or xanax for as needed anxiety and/or sleep
as for a pdoc name, sorry i'm not from around there. i hope you find one sooner rather than later.

Jill O'Brien at Blue Water Healing. She works with LENS and NeuroField, which can help head injuries and depression, and she does a few pain therapies -- acupuncture, cupping, and cold laser.

Hi,
I think it's kind of you to want to help your friend. I don't have any knowledge of pdocs in that areas, but I did want to mention one thing.
If she fractured her skull in a car wreck in 1996, she was only 5 years old. Anyone who experienced this shock at that age (or very possibly any age, for that matter) most certainly has had trauma. In fact, I would be more surprised to find at age 21, without any therapy in between, that a person does **not** have depression and panic attacks. PTSD is a very real possibility after such an event. Has she has talk therapy with any sort of MH professional? Preferably not her present pdoc unless he is dedicated and serious about therapy AND meds, which many pdocs now are not - not trained for it and simply don't have/won't take the time. I think this could be a huge help.
Not saying she doesn't need the pdoc for meds for the MH issues and the physical pain, but that may end up as just putting a temporary bandage over a much deeper wound. Maybe she can look for someone specializing in PTSD.

Stanley Stern MD is an excellent psychiatrist in Phoenix. Has dealt extensively with depression and pain (as well as trauma). He's very experienced and forward thinking (outside the box). Also very approachable. Highly recommended and definitely worth a call.
