I'm being treated for bipolar disorder. I'm currently taking only tegretol and my depression is off the charts. The last visit to the pdoc he put me on buspar for depression and anxiety. I feel it made me more depressed and didn't help at all with anxiety. I don't know what to try my next visit. I was thinking about viibryd, but doesn't viibryd contain buspar? I was thinking about paxil again. I had 10 years or so of decent results with paxil until I went manic on it. Would viibryd be a better choice? Does viibryd help with anxiety as this is a large part of my symptoms? Please help me with this. I'm really desperate for answers.

well there's various factors depending on what type of depression you have. You need to find out because the antidepressants have their own factors on how they will effect you.
Prozac - good for energy and OCD and some anxiety
Paxil - good for anxiety and depression
Zoloft - this is pretty wide prescibed antidepressant with multiple diagnsoses
Cymbalta - good for actual pain in the body AND low energy
Celexa - depression
Lexepro - anxiety and depression
Effexor - low energy and anxiety
Wellbutrin - very low energy. It's a indirect stimulant. Don't take it if you have problems with anxiety.I honestly don't know about Viibryd yet because it just came out and reviews are rare at this time. I do think it would benefit you. Try Lexepro because its usally a friendly antidepressant I see in doctors offices promoting it.

Rj, I tried everyone of the ad's you listed and paxil was the only one I had limited success with. Racing thoughts is a real issue with me and several mentioned here increased that. My pdoc mentioned viibryd was most like zoloft. Thanks for your input.

Usually docs will add some lamictal or an AAP for BP depression. If youre on tegretol that changes the dosing a bit but your doc will know that.
Some docs will add tiny doses of antidepressants. If you went manic after such a long time on it, maybe you can tolerate a small amount?
When you say you went manic, what happened? Irritable and agitated, or full on manic like shopping sprees and crazy impossible business ideas that seem like genius?
Buspar doesnt work for a lot of folks. And the effects can be very subtle especially if youre accustomed to the action of a benzo.

I had a full blown mania. Filling a shopping cart with 2000 dollars worth of stuff, lots of instances like that. My pdoc had me turn my credit cards over to my sister. It was definitely mania. With the tegretol on board I can try something like viibryd. The tegretol is giving me awful side affects. I'm clenching my jaw and terrible anxiety. Don't know whether to stay with tegretol and try an ad or try something like lithium and then add the ad. I almost think I'd be better off taking nothing at all then what I am currently taking.
