Neurontin question? Should I even ask?

Posted by floatingbridge on September 10, 2011, at 21:54:48

I have been reading about about gabapentinin.

It is not really a mood stabilizer, but has some of that quality.

It can help with pain a bit, with anxiety, and sleep (all a little).

The sides aren't terrible, are they? And if I can use it to slowly displace the new addition on tenazepam...?

Please understand I am trying to get a few meds to work, and I am just a bit clueless and recovering from some bad events.

Failing lamictal and being told we will not retry was crushing. I am not keen on these mood stabilizing agents I've read about.

Is discussing a small amount of neurontin off the wall?

I really need to get this wicked depression to lift, and I think I need to do it gently.

I doubt it will help your depression.

It will most likely be a milder version of Lyrica, though reports vary.

But it would help you lie still in bed if awake and improve sleep if that is what is happening, and that is important.

I'm quite sure it would be very useful for opiate and benzo withdrawal. You know that crawly grossly uncomfortable state? I guess a gabapentin withdrawal is like that.

Hi fb.
im on gabapentin.
i was afraid to ask but i had nothing to loose. i told my pdoc that i noticed when i had to take hydrocodone that my anxiety also relieved. i asked him point blank if he ever rx'd opiates. he then started talking about neurontin, and that its shown to help.
he rx'd me that.
i started at 100mg TID.
however after about a week that was way too low and i started playing with meds. i noticed that two or three would finally touch the anxiety i had.
i am now on 300TID. however, i have what you might call 'bouts' of anxiety. when i'm not really really depressed i dont seem to have much, so i dont take any. then other times (like now) i have MUCH, so i would take what i needed being cautious not to take more than 2100mg per day.

i'm now taking a combination of gabapentin and xanax as needed as sometimes gaba is not enough.

So 1. you may build tolerance to it, but not necessarily.
2. it Does help with sleep.
3. becareful and be aware of your depression. there are times that the more i take i notice it having an effect of increasing slightly my depression.

Good Luck and i hope you do try it. if nothing else you may find relief for a while.

Best wishes
b2c.

B2c,

I just read a study summary that said gabapentinin was more helpful reducing anxiety in BP patients than risperdone specifically and other AAP's including seroquel.

It also beat out AED's as well. Valproate was effective.

But if anxiety is my target.....

Thanks for the feed back. Everything pending.
