alternative to blood pressure meds??? please help

Posted by MatthewDavid on April 3, 2011, at 8:49:04

As many of you know these class of meds can raise blood pressure. I have read that Garlic, Fish Oil, CQ10, supplements can lower hypertension. Does anyone know how effective these can be or suggest any other supplements that can have a noticable impact. If these supplements do not have a drastic impact which prescription medications would you recommend. would be looking for something that doesn't cause too much drowsiness and relatively inexpensive.

thanks,

I've found that taurine (6 grams daily, in 2 equal doses) lowered my blood pressure a good bit. It tends to be mildly sedating.

Blood pressure - how to fix

hey, blood pressure is fixable. some changes may take up to a year maybe for full effect, like w-3 oil - oil in cell walls, fat storage has slow turnover so you need to "oil change" ?~30lbs of fat, which doesn't happen right away.

really, i'm going to say diet, even though that isn't a pill (hopefully). why take garlic pills when you could eat garlic??? eg, taurine was mentioned. taurine is found in fish. so eat some trout.

and i've kind of forgoten some things, causes of factors of good health are very correlated, so in the end, whats the difference.

most important,i would say eat good food, not too much, meditate, and do some exercise.

salt matters for some people. But getting enough water (tea counts!) and potassium are more important. Salt is more a marker of crappy food than the cause of bp. if food come from a box, don't eat it.
in general, eat some vegetables, fruit, nuts, legumes. some whole grains/bran, starchy tubers, seafood, some meat. fat - oil oil is a good first choice.

magnesium - nuts, beans, peas, veg, bran/whole grains.
potassium - veg, fruit, potatoes
coq10 - sup, (or eat offal, red palm oil, etc)
cocoa - dark chocolate
2 drinks a day
melatonin before bed

exercise - find something you enjoy. i like to lift weights. other good ideas - join a team, or walk dogs from the local pound.

meditate - i like zen. lots of options here.

anyway, if that doesn't work (in the 'work with your lifestyle' kind of way) ,i think ACE inhibitors are the best thing to try (unless you are black, in salt is more important and a diuretic would be the first choice).

Kyolic may have some beneficial compounds that are in amounts you cannot get from simply eating garlic. You can get Kyolic on the cheap if you buy Vitamin Shoppe brand aged garlic, they are the only company that sells the patented Kyolic under their own brand name at a much lower cost.

>2 drinks a day-2 drinks a day is fine for men, but for women, at least the majority of women, 2 drinks is getting into the toxic range. 2 drinks for women a few times a week would not be a big deal(I believe in hormesis), but everday may be pushing it for many women. I realize Mathew is likely a man, but it sounded like you made a general recommendation for 2 drinks a day : )

A HUGE +1 on the exercise! I would work your way up to intense exercise for 20 minutes and interval sprints(running, eliptical machine, stationery bike, swimming, whatever) once or twice a week for 12 to 15 minutes, again, when you are ready of course.

A generic ace inhibitor plus hydrocholrothiazide can be had for $4 a month at Walmort, and is a very effective and safe antihypertensive. No drowsiness, depression of cognitive3 impairment.
