Inflammation + Treatment-Resistant Depression

Posted by jjjaspar on March 28, 2011, at 12:42:11

I was very surprised to read about a research study to see if a medication which is a very strong anti-inflammatory agent called infliximab is an effective antidepressant in people who are medically healthy but have treatment-resistant depression.

We'll have to wait a while to see the outcome of that. I'd read before about the connection with pro-inflammatory cytokines before: http://itsnotmental.blogspot.com/2008/04/inflammation-of-body-and-brain.html but this type of testing will be taken more seriously if it pans out because it will be using a pharmaceutical agent a company can sell by prescription, if I understand this correctly.

Does this also explain why 600mg of motrin for 24 hours had me feeling good for first time in many years 24 hours later? What can you take though as now motrin tylenol celebrex are implicated in heart attacks and strokes? Phillipa

Yes, other anti-inflammatories have shown antidepressant effects:
aspirin
w-3 oil
celecoxib

most antidepressants show anti-inflammatory effects too.

bupropion lowers tnf-alpha specifically, like the mentioned drug.

philipa: direct inhibitors can increase infection risk: tnf-a and similar cytokines are part of the immune system's signal of an intruder, like infection or cancer. But if you aren't infected or don't have a tumor, you shouldn't have elevated levels. Chronic inflammation actually causes cancers, as well as depression, heart disease, etc.

same thing as adrenaline: good on occasion (helps run away from lion, or just exercise). bad if its always high.

d/r so what is the oil you mentioned? I still test positive for lymes disease 7 bands but not taking antibiotics as took for two years. So are you saying get cytokines tested? Is this a blood test. Write me. Phillipa

I suppose what really needs to be investigated and treated individually is WHAT IS CAUSING THE INFLAMMATION??? Personally, I feel that bad luck of the genetic draw is what has done me in. I have arthritis and asthma. My arthritis began in childhood. BUT, just recently I was found to have problems with some foods that add to an inflammatory process. I still don't think that is the "underlying cause" because WHY do I have an immune reaction to foods? I keep going back to just bad genetic luck.
By the way, Here are two important links about the food connections, even though, like I said the next question should be even WHY are we having these reactions and what can be done closer to the underlying cause, rather than just avoiding the foods?

w-3 = ω-3 = omega-3 = fish/krill/algae oil

i'm not sure what lymes tests are doing. htere is probably something going on, but we don't know enough about it yet.
