Geodon as Mood Stabilizer anyone?

Posted by SheilaC on January 17, 2011, at 8:31:35

Does anyone really use Geodon as their mood stabilizer?

I know a lot of people go with Lithium or Depakote, etc. But, I was wondering how many people use Geodon?

Anyone out there use it as their main med or just an add-on?

My daughter uses it as her main mood stabilizer. It was a miracle medication for her. She first tried Abilify and experienced just about all of the worst side effects. It also made her ravenously hungry. She was switched to Geodon, and although she battled overwhelming sleepiness for a couple of weeks, that subsided and she was just left with a profound stabilization of mood. She has a breakthru of mild, short-term manic symptoms maybe two or three times a year, so for my daughter - Geodon Rules!

A lot of docs use AAPs as mood stabilizers. Mostly because they are fast and easily interchanged.
Im not sure Id want to do this, myself though. Geodon may not have a reputation for metabolic issues like zyprexa, but it can make some folks manic at low doses. Its effects are very dose-dependent.
