Risperidone for anxiety anyone??

Posted by JMS600 on December 25, 2010, at 17:10:14

Has anyone tried risperidone for GAD and severe panic disorder? My p/doctor prescribed it for me earlier this week and i start 0.5mg per night tonight with an increase in about 2 weeks time. Zyprexa is the obvious choice here i know, but i experienced fairly intolerable side effects with the drug so my doc has opted this time for risperidone.

I'm also taking 20mg Lexapro, 600mg lithium, 40mg buspirone, and 600mg pregabalin. My doc is withdrawing the buspirone and I'm also asking him to stop the pregabalin, as i find it fairly ineffective.

So, any success with risperidone when taking along with anti-depressants?

Thanks!

Since you're starting a new antipsychotic, I think it would be useful to know how you responded to Zyprexa. Did it help your anxiety, and what side effects did it cause?

Hi ed_uk2000

90% of the times that i have taken Zyprexa i have responded well to it. I have to take 10mg or above of the drug, and i have to take it daily for a few days before it begins to work, however, i do find it has a good antidepressant efffect and is also good for anxiety.

Unfortunately, Zyprrexa causes terrible weight gain with me, and also causes a lot of daytime drowsiness - even though i take it at night.

Risperidone can cause weight gain too, although not as much as Zyprexa. It also tends to cause less drowsiness. The risk of movement disorders is reduced by keeping the dose as low as possible. I doubt you would need to exceed 4mg per day.

Risperidone can be given once or twice a day. You could start with 0.5mg twice a day and go from there. Response to antipsychotics is very variable. The initial dose should be low.

I missed that before. It sounds reasonable. I would be flexible about the '2 weeks', because it will depend on how you respond to the initial dose.

I suspect that it may reduce certain types of anxiety but antipsychotics are not generally used to treat panic disorder.

It's been a godsend for me for anxiety. Far better than the minor tranquilizers. I don't take it on a regular basis, but if I'm under stress I take a small dose for a few days.

It keeps the anxiety to a reasonable level, and even better, helps me focus and settles my runaway thoughts.

As needed really works for me. Knowing that it's available keeps me from anticipatory anxiety, I think.

I was having anxiety attacks that included hearing voices, so I was prescribed risperodone. It had an immediate effect. For the first time in my life I felt calm and okay, not euphoric or high, just okay. Unfortunately I gained 12 pounds in a month on that drug. AAPs worked so well for me but I can't take them because of the crazy weight gain.

Ed, my symptoms are very similar to yours. I am in the process of trying to find the right medication that will help with my hearing voices that cause my panic attacks + social anxiety. I'm currently on prozac and risperdal (2mg) for 3 weeks and ive only noticed a small change in my behavior, panic attacks still there. Some days better than others. Would medication are you on now since you gotten off Risperdal?
