amitriptyline for sleep

Posted by g_g_g_unit on December 16, 2010, at 19:49:39

So I decided to reinstate amitriptyline for sleep a couple of nights ago after finding my battalion of natural remedies were consistently coming up short.

Does anyone find that amitrip actually deepens sleep? I seem to fall asleep easier, but my sleep is really dream-ridden and I wake up with black circles under my eyes. I've been taking 10mg and last night went up to 15mg. Would raising the dose improve the quality of sleep?

Amitriptyline is OK for sleep, but very bad for waking up. Do not expect to jump out of bed in the morning. They say it helps to take it earlier in the evening.

Hi,

I have been on amitriptyline for 37 years, so I'm an expert on this medicine.

The normal dose for sleep would be 50 mg of amitriptyline. 15 mg is a very low dose.

I suggest that you try 30 mg of this drug two hours before bedtime.

When I began with Elavil in 1972 I took 30 mg for the first year. I slept well, but I lost my job and increased the dosage.

I think that amitriptyline is the nr 1 drug for sleep, but I have always hated the side effects.

Now I take 45 mg of mirtazapine for sleep.

Best regards,
X-ray

37 years a long time and you lost your job cause of the med? The side effects must not have good at all. Phillipa

Hi,

I didn't lose my job because of the medicine, but I became under a lot of pressure being unemployed.

So I increased the dosage of Elavil to cope with this situation.

I'm very happy to finally be rid of this drug.

Best regards,
X-ray

Hi Phillipa,

I slept a lot because I was unhappy.
It was an escape from reality.

Best regards,
