Hi Babble,
(I'm not taking this now, but I've been thinking about going on it again)
Desipramine used to help immensely with my ADD, but the sides were unpleasant so I would only be on it for a month or 2 at a time.
I would take it at night and it would knock me out for about 7 hours. I would wake up refreshed and jumping out of bed, ready to go. I took it a couple of times a year for several years.
Now, if I take it at bedtime, it keeps me up all night. If I take it in the morning, that night I fall asleep, but I wake up about 2 or 3am and can't sleep for an hour.
Any idea why a person's reaction to a drug like this would change?
And is there any way to combat this? Ambien doesn't really touch this insomnia.
BTW, other NRIs like strattera wake me up in the middle of the night, too.

I think our chemistry changes as ad's used to reve me up and benzos relax and now nothing. I wonder why this happens? Phillipa

When we take meds, they alter the brain. So med that didn't work might work again. New side effects might occur (as in your case). You never know.
Are you taking the same meds with Desipramine as you did before? Or is it the only med you are taking.
I used to go psychotic from Wellbutrin (tried it twice and the same happened). Then about 6 years later I tried and I didn't go psychotic (thank God)!

I don't even think the docs really know. I keep wondering if these brain alterations that drugs cause are damaging.

Hi Conundrum,
I've tried various dosages (though nothing above 75mg or 100mg).
I also tried different generic brands (eon, teva, some other). I couldn't get my hands on real name-brand Norpramin, unfortunately. Walgreens claims it isn't made anymore. (though drugstore.com claims they have it, maybe I should try again).

Yeah, I'm finding it troubling that meds can alter the brain, or stop working or do different things. Makes me think twice about taking them.
Anyway, I'm not taking desipramine now, but I'm thinking about trying it again because my add is so bad at work.

Sometimes I think coming off the med can make one more sensitive to the med in the future. I had something similar with prozac. I stopped it and then when I started it I felt dazed out of my mind. If I take tiny doses its beneficial, its almost as if stopping the drug amplified the effects of serotonin. It sounds like the same thing has happened to you with norepinephrine.
