Provigil - Anybody had success with it?

Posted by dreamweaver.2 on May 4, 2010, at 15:00:11

Just wanted to know if anyone has had success with adding Provigil to augment their AD?

Any experiences, both negative and positive, would be appreciated.

Thanks!

tried 200mg yest as it happens. Bit of a buzzy 'lots of coffee' feeling, quite chatty, good mood but not a massively noticeable difference. Mind you I'm augmenting Nardil 90mg so there's perhaps not much augmenting it can do...!

I'd be interested in hearing about this too, since it's one of the things my NP has suggested for ADD. I already take Cymbalta for anxiety / depression.

Dreamweaver,

It increased mental clarity for me and might have been enough had I not depression on top of add. I went back to my stim.

Have you web searched?

I also thought a thread title that mentioned provigil for adhd might get good answers.

Best to you.

Thanks so much. Don't much like the sounds of the "lots of coffee" feeling, but maybe at lower doses, there would not be not much of that.

Thanks so much! I have done a web search and had read lots of positive experiences for it for depression, particularly on Revolution Health. Seems that the positives outweigh the negatives in terms of response and efficacy, although the population reporting on it is not that big.

Do you mind my asking what AD and stim you are on right now? Was the stim prescribed for ADHD or to augment your AD? My doctor and I had discussed a stimulant since it is felt that I have a bit of ADHD, although it has never been too severe. I am a bit nervous of stimulants since I don't seem to do too well on ADs that hit the norepinphrine (sp) neurostransmitter. While they don't necessary increase my anxiety, they tend to make me apprehensive, if that makes sense. I am on Remeron, with Lexapro, right now and I have this underlying apprehensive feeling about doing things that never would cause me apprehension. I didn't have that before I went on the Remeron, with the exception of when I tried Effexor for about 6 months a number of years ago. Weird.

Thanks again! Have a great day!!

After 20 years of trying pretty much everything
the only thing that has brought me closest to normalcy has been Nuvigil (which is similar to Provigil). The best thing about it is you know if it works or not 30 minutes after taking it. I don't even take an AD anymore. And I don't have ADHD. My psyc dr. says that it has been very useful in treating depression on some patients. So go figure.

Thanks so much, ihatedrugs! I'm so happy for you that you have found something that works. My pdoc has written me a script for Provigil (Alertec in Canada) and I will try it out. He has a couple of other patients on it who have responded well to it. He is also having me drop the Remeron. So, I am going to wean off that first and then start the Provigil.

Hi,
I've taken it a couple times more since I last posted and I can definitely report an additional anti-depressant effect - I felt pretty "warm" and nice. Am taking it as-needed and Today I took 200mg because even at 10:30am I was falling asleep at my PC at work. It didn't make me more awake or alert (which is surprising but it is up against a lack of sleep and the soporific s/e's of 90mg Nardil) but I no longer kept falling asleep. In fact I worked 9am->4pm straight through without a lunch break or anything...!

Yes, its a good medication. I first got samples of the 200mg pack and often only needed just 100mg. Its a nice 'wake promoting agent' that isn't as habit forming or intense as stimulants. The problem is that many insurance carriers don't have it formulary so it is quite expensive. It can't be taken past the afternoon because you won't be able to get a good night sleep after that point. There is a new version called 'Nuvigil', which I didn't like as much because it didn't improve my mood like Provigil did.

Thanks, bearfan. I don't have to worry about my insurance. I am in Canada and have insurance through my work, which covers 80% of prescription drugs (with an annual $60 deductible). No formulary problems, at least that I have encountered in the many years I have had this insurance.

I haven't tried the Provigil yet. I want to wean off Remeron first before adding something new. So, in about a week I will be giving it a go. My doctor had first raised Concerta with me, but I asked him about Provigil and he seemed to think it may be worth trying. If it doesn't help, or I have unpleasant side effects, then I will try the Concerta.
