Parnate and Provigil/NUVIGIL?

Posted by mrm1036 on October 12, 2009, at 6:23:34

I suffer from major depression and my primary symptom is lack of energy. I'm on the following medications:

Parnate: 80mg
Lamictal: 2 mg
Abilify: 5 mg
Lunesta: 3 mg

I've found this combination to be helpful but I still suffer from lethargy. Has anyone been on Parnate AND Provigil/Nuvigil? If so, what were your reactions?

My psychiatrist spoke to me about adding Provigil/Nuvigil but he hasn't added it yet.

Thanks again.

The provigil really helps with tiredness. I am on 200mg and just got the go ahead to go even higher from my pdoc. He seems to think it is safe at higher doses as well..
My parnate is only at 20mg- just started 10-15 days ago. I'm still tired but I need to go up on the parnate.

So far no negative reactions.

Quite a few people on the board are on Provigil/ parnate. we have been discussing alot about that recently :)

Thanks for your response, Delna. I'll be talking with my psychiatrist about adding Provigil/Nuvigil (longer acting than Provigil?) at my next appointment with him.

Yes, give Parnate a chance. I've been on most anti-depressants and Parnate is only of two that has ever worked for me.

Hi Mrn1036

Welcome to Psycho-Babble! I'm glad your med combo is working out. Provigil sounds like something that might work.

Lethargy is certainly an annoying side effect. I find I get it when I take extra Risperdal. I end up sleeping the day away. So unproductive!

I like caffeine as a stimulant but if I take it too close to bedtime I won't be able to sleep. Does Provigil have that side effect?

Welcome....
May I ask which was the 2nd antidepressant that worked for you? Did it help the tiredness?

Over the course of my life I've been on Prozac at three separate times: from 1988 through 1990; 1992 through 1994; and 1995 through 1996.

It was only the first time that it helped and it was a GREAT help. However, it "pooped out" and the same applies for the 2nd and 3rd time I was on it. As I've said, I'm on a different combination now.

Dear mrm1036
Fatigue is a major depressive symptom for me, also. The addition of Provigil has enabled Parnate to work really well for me. I don't think I could be on Parnate without a stimulant.

Good luck to you,

Gayle

Thanks Gayle. When I saw my psychiatrist last week he again asked me if I want to have Nuvigil added and I told him "no," at least for now. However, my guess is that I will have it added in the near future.

I have a question: do you experience "tolerance" to the Provigil/Nuvigil?

Hi MRM:

I just now noticed your question, and lack of an answer! I'm sorry.

The answer for me is no, I haven't developed any tolerance like I might on dexadrine. But I do try to take the least amount possible.

I like Provigil much better than Nuvigil. Nuvigil is supposed to be the twin to bring out a new patent when Provigil will be in competition with a generic in a couple of years.
Get the Provigil if you can.

It is extremely helpful to me. My fatigue is getting better as time goes on (On Parnate for 6 months now), but still have some fatigue.

Sorry I took so long to answer!

Good luck,
Gayle

I know this was a question for Gayle so I am sorry to butt it..... but I just wanted to second what Gayle said about tolerance. I have been taking Provigil for a few years and I have not developed tolerance to it at all.

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate it. Chances are, my psychiatrist will add Nuevigil to the following meds I'm on:

Parnate- 80 mg
Abilify-5 mg
Lamictal-2 mg
Lunesta 3 mg

Again, my diagnosis is major depression and my primary symptom is tiredeness.

Thanks again.

I take Parnate and get very tired and sleepy. My arms and legs feel very heavy with an inner unbearable tickling in the shoulders, arms, hips and legs. Unlike akathesia this gets worse when I move. Does anyone else have this? Do you think it's caused by melatonin? I understand it's an acetylated form of serotonin

taking 400 mg Provigil is there a way to turn off the anexity at the end of the day when this crap starts to wear off. I also take .5 mg klonopin TID, but there must be something else I can use to balance.. does it make sense to try to block the Alpha receptors?
