Effexor starting to work..overnight?!

Posted by uncouth on January 1, 2010, at 14:48:38

Hi,

As I discussed in a previous post, I have been having trouble with resilience. I think it's serotonin related as despite al the meds i am on, none is an SSRI. So yesterday I took 150mg of Effexor and bam, within hours, I could feel a response. Hard to describe, but I was more "present", and the "ache" of depression was gone. It also helped with anxiety. I think it was a little too much too soon though so i'm going to stay at 75mg daily for a while to see how I feel.

Has anyone else experienced such a quick response? I don't think it was placebo, but who knows. My guess is that all my other meds somehow maybe potentiated the Effexor...

Im on

Wellbutrin 600mg
Zyprexa 5mg
Abilify 5mg
Deplin 7.5mg
Agomelatine 25mg
Namenda 10mg

That's amazing! I hope it keeps working for you. Why do you think it was too much too soon? Are you experiencing side effects?

Hi Uncouth.

Now, you know darn well that it wasn't a placebo response.

Effexor can definitely produce an initial "buzz" that occurs within an hour of the first dose. It has been my experience, though, that it lasts for less than a day. I think it is a good sign, though. I like the combination of medications that you are on. I think you have a good chance of responding to it.

Get well and stay well!

I am definitely feeling a buzz...and i'm also feeling it go away a bit. But it's nice to feel something going on that's taking away the deep despair....at the same time...now i remember why a few months ago I'd swear I'd never take another SSRI. It *is* a little numbing but perhaps thats what I need right now. Also, I feel just a tiny bit like how I always felt when In a mixed/hypomanic state...im nowhere near that but it's like the venlafaxine in my brain caused it to 'remember' what that hypomania was like a bit better.

All very strange, but hopefully a good sign. I've never repsonded to just a low dose of effexor in the past but hopefully this time with all the other meds i'm on that's all i need.

I guess it might be comparible to the first time taking of a med that I attributed to side effects? But that's great. Phillipa

Here's my guess. Agomelatine blocks serotonin receptors, so it's taking away some of the side effects that you would normally get from starting Effexor, leaving only some of the good effects. I have had a quick response to Paxil, too, and I'm on Remeron.
