dysphoria - help

Posted by southernsky on November 28, 2009, at 21:59:32

What works for dysphoria? This is a new symptom for me. I have dysphoria so bad right now. My therapist and doctor has suggested I try lamictal, but i went to 4 PDocs over the past few months and no one would dx me as bipolar. Ive been thinking of trying it as he suggested, have been hesitant, but now, suddenly i am almost at the point of calling his emergency number for the script.

Do you notice a difference with lamictal right away-or does it normally take a while? i know you have to start at 25 mg and work your way up, but does it sometimes help during the initial dosage?

If it takes time, is there anything else that works for dysphoria while waiting for it to kick in?

I'm not taking any meds right now, except have xanax 1/4 mg.. 30 per month as needed.......didn't need them every day but havent been able to sleep at night the past few days so i took more than 1 pill a day so i ran out, have refills but couldnt even get myself to go the pharmacy today. too late now its closed.

i guess i can get the xanax tomorrow, and wait until my next doctor appointment but i don't think thats a med that works well for dysphoria?

thank you

Kava Kava
Valerian Root
are good herbal things that will keep the nerve down.

Xanax is short acting but it does help with irrtiblity. Ativan also does as well...but doesnt much with the mood, it stablizes it more.

I found some Kava extract in the cupboard i forgot i had.I actually took it straight from the dropper instead of mixing it with water. anyway, it helped me sleep last night.

Philippa-I didn't even think of benedryl-thats something i could go out and get in the middle of the night if need be. i haven't taken it in years but i remember long ago, any allergy meds made my heart beat faster. but its been so long, it could be an option

Still trying to decide on a medication for when i see my doctor next week. Anytime we talk about it, we never decide on anything. its reassuring to see a pdoc every week now.

Thanks

Dysphoria? As in depressed. Ask for some Dexedrine or Mirapex if you want quick relief. Zyprexa is helpful too.

Dysphoria is such a generic generalized term, I am not sure what you mean by that. Dysphoria probably means different thing to different people.

I kept telling my doctor for months I felt so dysphoric. He asked what I meant. I said, well, toxic, poisoned, not well, but not sick, just well, I feel bad, not really sad, just yuck.

I didn't know at the time I had Lyme disease.

I also feel dysphoria when I start any antipsychotic. They just make me feel...bad.

I don't know what you mean by dysphoria. It's hard to know what to consider in addressing it without knowing how you would describe it.

No matter what the cause of dysphoria or the individual description of it, the only sure-fire immediate fix I have ever encountered is Vicadin. Obviously not a longterm solution, or even a short term solution. But a surefire winner once in a while as a single isolated dose.

Most people haven't heard of it, but in my experience a good treatment for general undefined mysterious dysphoria is low dose Naltrexone...1.5mg at bedtime. (has to be made at a compounding pharmacy since the doses are so small...so small they are even very difficult to make at home from a 50mg tab) Excellent longterm remedy for dysphoria.

Hi SouthernSky,

Have you gotten any relief yet? My pdoc had suggested lamictal as well. Given you sensitivity to meds, maybe a small amount will do. I was advised that lamictal can take some time to work. Any one please feel free to contradict this with experience.

Xanax works in an emergency, but, as we all know, tolerance is an issue. I'm glad it's available to you to help get you through this.

best to you,

fb

Yes, LDN is an interesting treatment. Why didn't you continue with it?

Yes. Low dose naltrexone has been proposed to be helpful in a wide variety of conditions, including autoimmune diseases, AIDs, and cancer.

Yeah it's gone. My tdoc just gave me Restoril. I slept better than I had in months. woke up feeling good for once. I loveitsofar. It even stopped the neck and back pain I've had for a few months now.

I'll have to see how things go from here. It made me feel energetic, the same as when I took st john's wort recently. But st johns wort did not help sleep.

How can dysphoria suddently appear? I've never had the symtpom before. The way i describe it is like excessive energy in your brain but unable to do anything with that energy. I't an aggravating feeling but hard to explain.

you sound soooooomuch better! :)
